If what the Bible claims about Jesus is true, then He is the most important person who ever walked this earth, and it’s imperative that everyone knows Him. However, many people simply don’t know Him or why He matters. Plenty of others think they know Him, but haven’t taken the time to really get to know Him as He’s revealed Himself.

You might be in one of those two camps, and if you are then this article is for you. I don’t want you to go any longer without knowing who Jesus is and why He matters more than any other person and thing in your life.

  • Jesus Christ is a real, historical person based on plenty of testimony (both within the Bible and outside of it) and the cultural impact His time on earth had. For example, whether we use BC/AD or BCE/CE, we can’t escape the fact that much of the world counts years based on Jesus’ birth.
  • He rose from the dead, a fact established on the testimony of numerous witnesses, many of whom were sent to harsh punishments and painful deaths when renouncing their testimony could have saved them.
  • As the One who came to earth, died, and rose again, we believe He must be listened to and heeded. What He tells us is that He has authority as King of Kings and Lord of Lords over the whole world (Matthew 28:18). He is the ruler of everything, and every human owes Him their obedience.
  • So, every time we disobey what He has commanded in His Word we sin against Him. Every sin is an act of rebellion against the God who cannot tolerate sin in His presence. The idea that God accepts “mostly good” people does not come from God Himself.
As 1 of the 3 persons of the Godhead (along with the Father and the Holy Spirit), Jesus shows us the character of God. God is full of love and patience toward us, and we see this in Jesus’ willingness to come to earth and go to the cross for us. However, God also is absolutely intolerant of sin, which is why Jesus needed to go to the cross for us in the first place.
  • We can be certain He will return to judge everyone on a final day, because He promised He would (Acts 17:31), and He always keeps His promises. We were told He would come to earth, and He did. We were told He would die, and He did. We were told He would rise from the grave, and He did. Now He has told us He will return to judge the living and the dead (2 Timothy 4:1). Based on His track record, you can be sure He will do exactly that.
  • With judgment facing all of us, we know sin must be paid for, and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Jesus, however, freely paid that debt for us. He died in your place, and if you believe in Him (John 3:16), renounce your sin and your self-governance (Galatians 2:20), and have your sins washed away in baptism (1 Peter 3:21), you can escape the punishment due all of us.
  • Not only do we escape the punishment of sin, we are given a new life and a promise of eternal life. Living by His way instead of our own, we find that what He asks of us is not burdensome, but makes for a life of joy and peace. And when we die, we know we will rest with Him until He returns in judgment (Philippians 1:21-23), and then we will reign with Him forever (Revelation 22:5).

Wouldn’t living your life for Jesus, with peace, joy, a sure hope, and a purpose bigger than anything this world can offer, be a better way? Repent (renounce your sin and stop living for self and start following Him), be baptized (immersed into water to reenact His death, burial, and resurrection), be added to His church (Acts 2:38, 47), and start following Him.
