\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nIf there is a subject that impassions me, one that gets my heart racing and tightens up my chest just a bit,\u00a0one that fills me with joy but also rallies my defenses, it would be\u00a0\u201cthe worth of a woman<\/b>.<\/b>\u201d<\/b>\u00a0<\/i>I attribute this conviction\u00a0partly\u00a0to the\u00a0fact that I have\u00a0two sisters, a mother who can do\u00a0any<\/b>thing<\/b>, and a father who is both a retired military\u00a0general\u00a0and a practicing physician (who never let the reality of having\u00a0three\u00a0daughters keep him from treating us any differently had we\u00a0been three\u00a0sons); but\u00a0even more, I\u00a0feel strongly about this subject because\u00a0I know that\u00a0God loves and values women.\u00a0He has since the\u00a0beginning of time,\u00a0and He still does today.\u00a0<\/span>
\nI have happy memories of a childhood spent flying\u00a0across this beautiful country under\u00a0Air Force\u00a0wing.\u00a0Through the disquiet of transition, our\u00a0parents made it priority to instill in\u00a0each of\u00a0us a\u00a0strong sense of\u00a0who<\/b>\u00a0we are and\u00a0whose<\/b>\u00a0we are.\u00a0They reared three\u00a0confident\u00a0women who\u00a0whole-heartedly love God and who are fiercely devoted to family.\u00a0I have looked\u00a0back over the years\u00a0and often wondered,\u00a0\u201cHow in the world did they do that?\u201d<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>
\nI\u2019ve made mental notes of the activities we did, the places we saw, and the people we\u00a0met.\u00a0I even sat down and\u00a0made a list of the most important\u00a0lessons we were taught, and when I did,\u00a0I found that I could group those lessons\u00a0under the\u00a0three\u00a0essential\u00a0concepts\u00a0found in Matthew 22:36-40:\u00a0\u00a0L<\/b>ove God, love others,\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0love yourself<\/b>.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201c<\/span>Teacher, which\u00a0is\u00a0the great commandment in the law?\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\nJesus said to him, \u201cYou shall love the\u00a0Lord\u00a0your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.\u00a0This is\u00a0the\u00a0first and great commandment.\u00a0And\u00a0the\u00a0second\u00a0is\u00a0like it:\u00a0\u2018You shall love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019\u00a0On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\nHowever, in a society that believes we no longer need God,\u00a0an education system\u00a0that promotes secular humanism,\u00a0the push of radical feminists to erase all gender distinctions,\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0continual moral decline of our country\u2026how do I teach my daughters those concepts today\u00a0so that they will\u00a0cherish their womanhood and\u00a0recognize their worth?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. L<\/b>ove God<\/b>.\u00a0We teach our\u00a0daughters\u00a0to love God when we make Him the center of our family.\u00a0God comes first\u2026always.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Mom is a master story teller and\u00a0made the men and women of the\u00a0Bible come to life as she told me and my sisters\u00a0about their amazing experiences.\u00a0Dad shared pictures and stories of his mission work in Africa,\u00a0and\u00a0I could feel his excitement when he described preaching a sermon in Swahili.\u00a0I watched Mom prepare for teaching Bible classes over and over,\u00a0and the times we\u2019ve held hands while Dad led our family in prayer are innumerable.\u00a0<\/span>
    \nWe attended\u00a0worship services,\u00a0Bible classes,\u00a0devotionals, gospel meetings, Vacation Bible School, youth events, and potlucks; but we also sang worship songs in the car, talked about the Bible at home, and heard our parents sharing the\u00a0Gospel with others.\u00a0Loving God was not just an occasional demonstration of faith, it was a way of living\u00a0day\u00a0to day\u00a0that defined\u00a0who we were as a\u00a0Christian\u00a0family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Love Others<\/b>.\u00a0<\/b>We teach our daughters to love others when we look for opportunities to serve and help people in need.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Dad\u2019s travels to Africa during the time that he was studying Tropical Medicine always began with a ritual \u201cgathering.\u201d\u00a0My sisters and I would go through our clothes and toys and gather items for Dad to take to the children in the villages where he stayed.\u00a0I loved this ritual, because Dad would come home and tell us about how much the children enjoyed the gifts.\u00a0I remember sending a frisbee with Dad one year and when he came back he told me how the frisbee had been used as a toy, a drum, and a bowl for water! I was so proud!\u00a0<\/span>
      \nMom is also a master chef and I will never forget the many, many times she welcomed people into our home to share a meal with us.\u00a0She made food for church functions,\u00a0for someone who was sick,\u00a0or for her co-workers at the hospital as a midnight treat.\u00a0She\u00a0is the epitome of\u00a0Southern hospitality and\u00a0loves\u00a0to open her door\u00a0to\u00a0others.\u00a0One of my favorite memories as a child is the smell and feel of our home just before guests came over.\u00a0Loving others was not just an occasional gesture;\u00a0it was a way of living that defined who we were as a\u00a0Christian\u00a0family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Love Yourself<\/b>.\u00a0<\/b>We teach our daughters to love themselves when we show them that they are valued by their parents and their Creator.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \u201cYou can do anything!\u201d \u201cI love you.\u201d \u201cHave I hugged you yet\u00a0today?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m so proud of you.\u201d \u201cWhen I see you cry it breaks my heart.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re a Belihar, and Belihars never quit!\u201d\u00a0I could go on and on and on listing simple words and repeated phrases that constantly reaffirmed our parents love and support.\u00a0Through that continual encouragement, Mom and Dad taught us that\u00a0we were special, just as God had made us to be.\u00a0<\/span>
        \nThey celebrated our victories, provided help when we needed it, cheered us on with every endeavor, motivated us to try new things, and they never made us feel we couldn\u2019t do something because we were women, but rather inspired us to live to our full potential\u00a0as women of God and\u00a0always<\/b>\u00a0in harmony with\u00a0His Word.\u00a0Loving ourselves was not just an occasional feeling;\u00a0it was a way of living\u00a0that\u00a0defined who we were as a Christian family.\u00a0<\/span>
        \nWhen we teach our daughters to\u00a0love God, love others,\u00a0and love themselves,\u00a0we help them to develop a strong sense of\u00a0who\u00a0<\/b>they are and\u00a0whose\u00a0<\/b>they are.\u00a0The role God gave us as women is one to be honored, never resented.\u00a0We must realize our worth and\u2026\u201ca<\/b>im\u00a0<\/b>h<\/b>igh<\/b>\u201d!\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
