{"id":6223,"date":"2018-03-03T14:45:18","date_gmt":"2018-03-03T20:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tampaseo.expert\/focus\/?p=6223"},"modified":"2018-03-03T14:45:18","modified_gmt":"2018-03-03T20:45:18","slug":"time-smell-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tampaseo.expert\/focus\/2018\/03\/03\/time-smell-corruption\/","title":{"rendered":"Time to Smell the&#8230; Corruption!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<strong>By Lowell Hagewood<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<b>\u00a0<\/b><b>&#8220;<\/b><b>\u2026<\/b><b>no<\/b><b>\u00a0truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure freedom<\/b><b>.<\/b><b>&#8220;<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>\u2013\u2013Noah Webster, signer of t<\/b><b>he\u00a0<\/b><b>Constitution<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:6480,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nUpon arriving in Washington D.C. in 1937,\u00a0freshman Congressman Lyndon Johnson reputedly commented that the Capitol\u00a0&#8220;smelled&#8221;\u00a0of\u00a0<b>power<\/b>, an aroma he loved and &#8220;enjoyed&#8221; to the fullest as President of the United States nearly 30 years later.\u00a0However, the odor became so foul under his successor\u00a0Richard Nixon\u00a0that an enraged press and public drove him from the White House in 1974 over a series of government abuse scandals collectively known as &#8220;Watergate.&#8221;\u00a0But seldom have so many\u00a0scandals\u00a0exploded\u00a0within days of each other as those during the summer of 2013.\u00a0Yet, the odor is only offensive to a select portion of\u00a0the\u00a0news media and public.\u00a0Where is the outrage over the I.R.S. targeting of faith-based organizations, or the N.S.A. storing and perhaps monitoring of billions of phone calls and e-mails without probable cause?\u00a0Is our\u00a0society\u00a0so\u00a0celebrity-driven\u00a0that only the opinions of our favorite pop culture icons matter?\u00a0Possibly, but even N.S.A.\u00a0leaker\u00a0Edward\u00a0Snowden has received more attention than Kim and\u00a0Kayne&#8217;s\u00a0baby or Derek Jeter&#8217;s girlfriend.\u00a0Or is it more likely that Americans have become so accustomed to the stench of scandal that they\u00a0can no longer &#8220;smell&#8221; it?\u00a0The latter\u00a0scenario\u00a0is the most dangerous\u00a0because it is one\u00a0that\u00a0has resulted from the steady secularization of our government and society and threatens our most fundamental freedoms.\u00a0<b>Please read on!<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i>In Government We Trust:<\/i><\/b><b><i>\u00a0Get Your Gas Masks Here!<\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Did you know\u00a0that\u00a0as late as 1892\u00a0every state in the Union\u00a0not only featured some type of God-centered declaration in their constitutions,\u00a0but\u00a0many\u00a0also\u00a0required their elected officials to affirm their belief in God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit?\u00a0Today the mere suggestion of such oaths would be the basis of a lawsuit.\u00a0But have you ever wondered why early Americans,\u00a0especially\u00a0those\u00a0contemporary\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0American\u00a0Revolution\u00a0and\u00a0the writing of our &#8220;Founding Documents,&#8221; supported such a close\u00a0relationship\u00a0between Christian values and the public square?\u00a0\u00a0As students of classical history,\u00a0the authors of America&#8217;s freedom documents\u2013\u2013the &#8220;Founding Fathers&#8221;\u2013\u2013were keenly\u00a0aware\u00a0of\u00a0how\u00a0repressive\u00a0<b>democratic<\/b>\u00a0governments can become when their basis is secular or pagan.\u00a0While ancient Athens pioneered democracy,\u00a0the\u00a0Greeks were polytheists who did not subscribe to what Thomas Jefferson called &#8220;unalienable rights&#8221; that come from a singular Creator.\u00a0The\u00a0Greeks\u00a0believed\u00a0the universe\u00a0originated\u00a0from an impersonal, divine force, not a personal God\u00a0who\u00a0created\u00a0man in His own image with fundamental, natural rights that all human governments must protect.\u00a0Consequently, the periods of\u00a0Greek\u00a0democratic government usually degenerated into dictatorships, giving rise to the term\u00a0<i>tyranny<\/i>. While the American Founders were also fascinated with the Roman Republic,\u00a0neither\u00a0Greece\u00a0nor\u00a0Rome accepted a doctrine of equal, God-given rights to\u00a0protect\u00a0the\u00a0individual\u00a0from the state.\u00a0Negatively impressed, Jefferson and his generation rejected a secular basis for the Declaration of Independence, the\u00a0Constitution, and\u00a0the\u00a0Bill of Rights\u00a0and chose\u00a0a Biblical one rooted in Romans 13.\u00a0Just as God established government as a servant of the people with the power to defend and protect them, Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that people were not created by God to serve the government.\u00a0Instead, the government was to serve man by protecting three God-given, and therefore, unalienable rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.\u00a0Conversely, without God, the highest lawgiver,\u00a0rights are not &#8220;unalienable,\u201d\u00a0but are based on whatever the\u00a0<b>government<\/b>\u00a0deems legal.\u00a0In other words, if the secular state becomes the highest moral authority, the government decides what values its\u00a0citizens\u00a0can hold.\u00a0Unalienable rights are\u00a0no longer\u00a0inseparable gifts from God, but are provided by the state and, consequently, temporal.\u00a0This would\u00a0also explain why many states once required their elected officials to believe in the Godhead.\u00a0Otherwise, how could leaders\u00a0be expected to protect God-given freedoms without a belief in God?\u00a0In short, without a Biblical vision of the human person, our political life is doomed to become the mere exercise of power subject to the whim of a tyrant,\u00a0caesar, dictator, or president.<span data-fontsize=\"12\">1\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i>The Declaration\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b><i>o<\/i><\/b><b><i>f &#8220;Dependence&#8221;<\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:-720,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Contemporary secularists ignore the Biblical roots of American freedom by\u00a0\u00a0 manipulating the media and public\u00a0with\u00a0the language of\u00a0&#8220;compassion&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0&#8220;human rights.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Myopically,\u00a0many Christians have bought into President Obama&#8217;s &#8220;spiritualization&#8221; of the welfare state when he claims that\u00a0all Americans\u00a0have a\u00a0mutual responsibility to be their\u00a0&#8220;brother&#8217;s keeper&#8221; and that responsibility should be defined and implemented through the\u00a0government.\u00a0In reality,\u00a0<b>Christianity<\/b><b>\u00a0teaches reliance up<\/b><b>on God, not the government<\/b>.\u00a0Christianity\u00a0limits the power of civil government,\u00a0as &#8220;there is only one Lawgiver and Judge,\u00a0the One who is able to save and destroy&#8221; (James 4:12).\u00a0Tragically,\u00a0this\u00a0Christian\u00a0worldview\u00a0has been under steady\u00a0assault\u00a0for 50 years,\u00a0and just since 2009,\u00a0there has\u00a0been\u00a0such a dramatic increase in federal entitlements that\u00a0today 60% of Americans receive more government benefits than they pay in taxes.\u00a0Even more\u00a0insidious\u00a0is the trend toward\u00a0<b>centralization<\/b>, which secularization\u00a0necessitates.\u00a0Secularists\u00a0know that in a nation with a long Christian\u00a0heritage\u00a0like\u00a0the U.S.,\u00a0only the federal government has the power\u00a0to\u00a0rival\u00a0the influence of family, church, and\u00a0community\u00a0with cradle-to-grave welfare or\u00a0by\u00a0special rights for minority behaviors\u00a0abhorrent\u00a0to people of faith.\u00a0Whereas God-given natural rights\u00a0limit the government&#8217;s power, government-created ones expand it\u00a0under the guise of &#8220;humanitarianism,&#8221;\u00a0i.e., the right to health insurance, food stamps, student loans, marriage &#8220;equality,&#8221; just to name a few.\u00a0Secular rights are also\u00a0<b>relativistic<\/b>,\u00a0subject\u00a0to increasing\u00a0demands\u00a0from recipients and the centralized, impersonal boards and agencies\u00a0that implement them.\u00a0In such a humanist\u00a0paradigm, the\u00a0government\u00a0must grow in power and\u00a0become increasingly\u00a0authoritarian\u00a0in determining which &#8220;rights&#8221; are legal.\u00a0Should faith-based companies be\u00a0forced\u00a0by the\u00a0government\u00a0to provide health coverage that includes abortion-inducing\u00a0drugs?\u00a0Should a state that passes a\u00a0state-wide\u00a0referendum\u00a0with a Biblical definition of marriage\u00a0be forced to recognize same-sex marriage through a court order?\u00a0Can an\u00a0Army sergeant with 25 years experience be punished for serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at his promotion party in honor of the Defense of Marriage Act?\u00a0The\u00a0answer\u00a0has been an\u00a0emphatic\u00a0<b>yes<\/b>\u00a0in each case!<span data-fontsize=\"12\">2<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i>The Road\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b><i>t<\/i><\/b><b><i>o Tyranny<\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAccording to many of the Founders, if legality determines morality then dictatorship must be the result.\u00a0The framers of America&#8217;s\u00a0Constitution\u00a0understood\u00a0that\u00a0there could be only one\u00a0true\u00a0foundation\u00a0for\u00a0republics\u2013\u2013religion and morality\u2013\u2013because if people voluntarily accept moral\u00a0responsibility\u00a0for their\u00a0actions,\u00a0the government will not\u00a0have to\u00a0coerce\u00a0them.\u00a0On the contrary, a democracy divorced from moral and religious foundations would destroy itself in crime, corruption, and ultimately become a dictatorship to restore order.\u00a0They understood that\u00a0without a concept of sin, tyranny is certain.\u00a0If there are no moral absolutes in society, we cannot expect them in government.\u00a0Without them in government, policies cannot be based on anything but\u00a0<b>raw<\/b>\u00a0<b>power<\/b>.\u00a0Hence, whoever is in power shapes the laws to\u00a0serve\u00a0them\u00a0rather\u00a0than protecting the\u00a0constitutional\u00a0rights of the people.\u00a0As a case in point, the\u00a0Supreme\u00a0Court&#8217;s de facto reversal\u00a0of California&#8217;s Proposition 8\u00a0in June 2013\u00a0should concern all Americans, Christian or otherwise.\u00a0In denying\u00a0the\u00a07,000,000 Californians who voted for a Biblical\u00a0definition\u00a0definition of marriage a voice in the making of state law, the\u00a0<b>least democratic<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>most centralized<\/b>\u00a0branch of government\u2013\u2013the judiciary\u2013\u2013is advancing a\u00a0<b>political<\/b><b>\u00a0agenda<\/b>\u00a0opposite their\u00a0Constitutional\u00a0purpose of\u00a0<b>interpreting<\/b>, not\u00a0<b>making<\/b>\u00a0law.\u00a0&#8220;Smell&#8221; the corruption?\u00a0Our\u00a0government\u00a0is becoming\u00a0a thinly veiled\u00a0dictatorship\u00a0with\u00a0awesome\u00a0power, but no\u00a0responsibility\u00a0to God&#8217;s\u00a0laws, the\u00a0Constitution,\u00a0or\u00a0its\u00a0fellow citizens.\u00a0Thus, as\u00a0secular\u00a0humanism\u00a0replaces God and moral relativism replaces moral\u00a0responsibility, William Penn&#8217;s 17th\u00a0century\u00a0caveat appears\u00a0more\u00a0astute than ever that,\u00a0&#8220;those who will not be governed by God will be\u00a0ruled\u00a0by tyrants.&#8221;<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">3<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i>The Faithful Remnant<\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>Americans, both Christian and non-Christian alike, will\u00a0continue\u00a0to have trouble\u00a0smelling the stench of corruption without both re-examining the Christian roots of American freedom and re-engaging in civil stewardship from a\u00a0Biblical\u00a0perspective.\u00a0Christians must be the faithful remnant and\u00a0alternative\u00a0to a\u00a0government\u00a0and culture embracing same-sex marriage,\u00a0institutionalizing\u00a0anti-Christian\u00a0bias in government programs and agencies such as the I.R.S.\u00a0and\u00a0mandating pro-abortion policies for faith-based companies, schools, and\u00a0hospitals\u00a0through &#8220;Obamacare.&#8221; Much is still not known\u00a0about\u00a0the N.S.A. program of mining phone and e-mail data of citizens, but it too is beginning to have that &#8220;Orwellian smell of &#8216;Big Brother.'&#8221;\u00a0 In\u00a0the final analysis,\u00a0\u00a0<b>Christians<\/b><b>\u00a0cannot change a culture for Christ by just using worldly means such as politics<\/b><b>.\u00a0<\/b><b>Real cultural change comes from the inside<\/b><b>.\u00a0<\/b>But it is also true that American political and social institutions once\u00a0<b>respected<\/b>\u00a0and even\u00a0<b>reflected<\/b>\u00a0Christian values because Christians lived and voted in such a way that shaped those institutions.\u00a0They also understood the Biblical basis of American constitutional\u00a0law and\u00a0were quick to defend their constitutional rights.\u00a0To do otherwise, to abandon civil stewardship and ignore Christ\u2019s admonition to be\u00a0\u201csalt and light\u201d\u00a0in society is to ignore God&#8217;s warning,\u00a0&#8220;When the righteous rule,\u00a0the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule the people mourn.&#8221; Obviously, the righteous cannot rule unless Christians help to elect them, and without Christian values in government,\u00a0we subject ourselves to devious, immoral leaders who will bring hardships on &#8220;we the people.&#8221;
