\nThe fundamental aim of radical feminism is the\u00a0eradication\u00a0of patriarchy from\u00a0our\u00a0society. They see the structure of patriarchy as an oppressive and abusive system designed to subjugate and enslave women.\u00a0Thus any institution that maintains distinctions based upon gender is the enemy of radical feminism.\u00a0That being the case, God, the Bible, and the church have all\u00a0come under heavy criticism from radical feminists.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHowever, patriarchy is not the\u00a0defective\u00a0brainchild of\u00a0self-serving\u00a0men, but rather\u00a0it is\u00a0a manifestation of the wisdom of God.\u00a0It was God who, from the\u00a0very\u00a0beginning, placed\u00a0the\u00a0man in a leadership position (1 Corinthians 11:3-12).\u00a0This leadership was not designed to oppress or enslave women, but rather to enrich and\u00a0liberate\u00a0women from responsibilities that would belong to the man instead.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHas patriarchy ever been abused? Of course it has.\u00a0I can\u2019t think of a single good institution that hasn\u2019t been twisted and perverted by people themselves who were twisted and perverted.\u00a0But don\u2019t equate patriarchy with the abuses that occur under a patriarchal system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nGod designed men and women differently.\u00a0While radical feminists may argue long and loud that men and women are the same, and gender is neutral, it simply is not the case.\u00a0The Holy Spirit instructed the apostle Peter to write that women are to be treated with a special measure of honor as a \u201cweaker vessel\u201d (1 Peter 3:7).\u00a0When God created Eve, he did not simply replicate Adam, but he created a woman, different from the man, but who was suitable and who complemented the man (Genesis 2:18).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhile there are many philosophical mistakes within radical feminism, the overarching mistake that I see is that they see \u201cfairness\u201d and \u201cequality\u201d as the same thing as \u201csameness.\u201d But they are not.\u00a0Any parent with children can attest to the fact that \u201cfairness\u201d doesn\u2019t mean you treat your children the same\u00a0way.\u00a0Likewise\u00a0\u201cequality\u201d\u00a0is not to be confused with \u201csameness.\u201d It is because of this confusion\u00a0that\u00a0radical feminism is opposed to God, the Bible, and the church, for they recognize and approve of gender-based role distinctions.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThere was a time when in the days of the apostle Paul, he and other Christians were accused of turning the world upside down (Acts 17:6).\u00a0However, today it appears that the impact of the radical feminist\u00a0movement\u00a0and their message of \u201cgender-neutrality\u201d\u00a0are\u00a0turning the church upside down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn order to understand how this has been accomplished, we might begin with Galatians 3:28.\u00a0This verse affirms, \u201cThere is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.\u00a0And if you are Christ\u2019s, then you are Abraham\u2019s seed, and heirs according to the promise.\u201d\u00a0Are the radical feminists\u00a0correct in affirming that Christianity should be gender-neutral? After all, this passage does teach that in Christ, we are neither male nor female.\u00a0<\/span>
\nTo\u00a0reach such a conclusion is a tragic mistake.\u00a0In fact, it is a very old mistake.\u00a0It is\u00a0the very mistake made by Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and\u00a0On\u00a0which we read about in Numbers 16.\u00a0In this passage,\u00a0Korah and his companions gathered themselves together against Moses and Aaron, and accused them of \u201ctaking too much upon themselves.\u201d In other words,\u00a0they were accusing Moses and his brother Aaron of doing some things that\u00a0some of the rest of\u00a0them\u00a0would like to do.\u00a0They didn\u2019t think it was\u00a0fair for\u00a0them\u00a0to be able to do\u00a0certain things\u00a0while they were\u00a0excluded from\u00a0doing them (the \u201cfair\u00a0=\u00a0sameness mistake\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nNote carefully their reasoning which led them to their thinking that Moses\u00a0and Aaron weren\u2019t\u00a0being fair.\u00a0They said, \u201cFor all the congregation is holy, everyone one of them, and the Lord is among them.\u00a0Why then do you exalt yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?\u201d (verse\u00a03).\u00a0The mistake that Korah was making was that he was confusing \u201cvalue\u201d and \u201cright standing\u201d with \u201cresponsibility.\u201d In other words, he was saying, \u201cSince God loves all of us and we are all holy,\u00a0and equally valued,\u00a0then we should all be able to do the same things.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\nBut Moses\u00a0refuted this line of reasoning by reminding Korah, who just so happened to be a son of Levi, that he himself was privileged to serve God in ways that the rest of the congregation could not.\u00a0Of course,\u00a0the outcome of this disagreement was settled by God\u00a0when Korah and his followers were swallowed up by the earth.\u00a0Moses was right.\u00a0Value and responsibility\u00a0are\u00a0not the same thing.\u00a0Equality and responsibility\u00a0are\u00a0not the same thing.\u00a0While God may value\u00a0His people equally, that does not mean\u00a0His people all have the same responsibility.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThis is the very mistake\u00a0that radical feminists are making with respect to Christianity and the church.\u00a0They oppose the church for practicing male spiritual leadership, using Galatians 3:28 as a proof text.\u00a0However,\u00a0Galatians 3:28 is not speaking about responsibility, but is rather affirming that regardless of one\u2019s nationality, social status, or gender, we are all one in Christ and heirs of Abraham.\u00a0The mistake they\u2019re making is their incorrect assumption that\u00a0equal standing and worth before God\u00a0equates to\u00a0equal responsibilities.\u00a0But such is not the case and can easily be proven.\u00a0In\u00a01\u00a0Timothy 3 and Titus 1, when God limited the eldership to men\u2026\u00a0no, men who are husbands\u2026\u00a0no, men who are husbands and who are also fathers,\u00a0He demonstrated that role distinctions exist within the church.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhile God is a God of justice and equality,\u00a0He did ordain gender-based role distinctions in the home as well as in the church.\u00a0God ordained the husband to be the head of the wife (Ephesians 5:23), and\u00a0He ordained that the wife is to be subject to her husband (Ephesians 5:24).\u00a0This difference is not an issue of equality, but rather an issue of responsibility. The responsibility of headship that has been given to the man is not given to him so that he can \u201cprove he\u2019s a man\u201d by some sort of heavy-handed, oppressive leadership.\u00a0Rather, it is given to him so that he can \u201cprove what kind of man he is\u201d by leading his wife\u00a0in such a way that it demonstrates that he loves\u00a0her more than his own life (Ephesians 5:25).\u00a0<\/span>
\nLikewise, within the church God ordained gender-based role distinctions.\u00a0He ordained that the men would be leaders in the church (1 Timothy 3:1-2; Titus 1:5-6), and that women were not to preach or have authority over the man (1 Timothy 2:11-15).\u00a0Again, these differences are not an issue of equality, but rather an issue of responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhile it may not be politically correct\u00a0to teach male spiritual leadership in the home and the church\u00a0due to the influence radical feminists\u00a0have had in our culture,\u00a0it is precisely the message that is needed today.\u00a0Culture must not determine the teachings of the church.\u00a0That should be determined by the Bible.\u00a0And while some may not understand why God chose to use patriarchy and male spiritual leadership and are too near-sighted to see its benefits, it is God\u2019s way,\u00a0it is\u00a0His\u00a0Word,\u00a0and\u00a0His way is always best.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe irony of radical feminism is that in their effort to supposedly free\u00a0women from \u201cbondage\u201d to men, they have in reality brought women into bondage to feminism.\u00a0Unwittingly, women have become slaves in the name of freedom! In short, radical feminism is born out of\u00a0selfishness and rebellion; rebellion against God\u2019s divinely appointed order for the home and the church.\u00a0The freedom that so many women are seeking is not to be found in picking up the burden of radical feminism, but rather by giving their burdens to Jesus and making him their Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cAnd you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free\u2026Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be\u00a0entangled again with a yoke of bondage\u201d (John 8:32; Galatians 5:1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
