\nA mother\u00a0is\u00a0more than\u00a0the duties she performs. She is not just\u00a0an audience,\u00a0cook,\u00a0nurse, storyteller,\u00a0chauffeur,\u00a0and teacher. She is the one who dries away tears and makes\u00a0all the\u00a0hurts feel better. She corrects\u00a0mistakes and\u00a0comforts the broken\u00a0heart. To her\u00a0child, a mother is everything good rolled into one irreplaceable package.\u00a0To that child, she is the most important person in the world. But what\u00a0happens\u00a0if\u00a0she\u00a0goes missing?\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn\u00a0P.D. Eastman\u2019s\u00a0Are You My Mother<\/i>?,\u00a0a mother bird flies away to secure food for her\u00a0baby. When he hatches, he realizes his mother is\u00a0missing and\u00a0goes on a journey asking\u00a0everyone and everything he finds, \u201cAre you\u00a0my mother?\u201d He becomes\u00a0frantic,\u00a0knowing\u00a0his very real need for his\u00a0mother\u00a0is unfulfilled. In the end, he\u00a0is placed back in the nest and\u00a0his\u00a0mother returns with food, oblivious to his plight.\u00a0This scenario is played out all too often in our world as mothers\u00a0try\u00a0to\u00a0achieve\u00a0balance\u00a0between\u00a0their desire to provide what they\u00a0feel<\/b>\u00a0<\/i>their families\u00a0need and\u00a0their longing\u00a0to be there for their families.\u00a0They busy themselves\u00a0doing things in which\u00a0they see\u00a0importance, but\u00a0miss out on the bigger need\u2013\u2013their\u00a0children\u2019s need for\u00a0their presence. Many women\u00a0inadvertently\u00a0neglect the seemingly mundane, but infinitely important task of simply being Mom.\u00a0Sadly, real life doesn\u2019t always have the happy ending found in\u00a0Are You My Mother?<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe absence of mothers in the home, whether a physical absence or the practical absence of a mother who is physically there, robs\u00a0children of a\u00a0precious example of God\u2019s love.\u00a0God comforted\u00a0the children of Israel with reminders that He loved\u00a0them like a nursing mother,\u00a0saying He would\u00a0always be there with them and care for them\u00a0(Isaiah 49:15<\/a>, 66:13).\u00a0Too many children today\u00a0have a hard time relating to\u00a0the idea of a mother like this\u00a0\u2013\u2013one who is always there,\u00a0who\u00a0is fully invested in them and\u00a0who\u00a0is the go-to person in their lives for comfort, guidance and love.\u00a0Lacking an example of\u00a0this kind of\u00a0love, children may misunderstand the love that God has for them.\u00a0He\u00a0cares for us far better than any earthly mother could, but He expects mothers\u00a0to show\u00a0love\u00a0like His\u00a0to their\u00a0children. We\u00a0cannot successfully complete this task if our time, energy, and focus are spent elsewhere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn many ways our children are like the talents in the parable Jesus told (Matthew 25:14-30). God has given them to\u00a0us\u00a0<\/b>to care for and turn into something more for Him. Let\u2019s not \u201cbury\u201d them by simply filling their minds and time with worldly pursuits or allowing others to do so in our absence.\u00a0When\u00a0we allow\u00a0others\u00a0to\u00a0fill our\u00a0role as \u201cthe one\u201d in\u00a0the early years of\u00a0a child\u2019s life,\u00a0we are missing the most crucial time for pointing out that God is the reason for everything. Children are never as eager to soak up every word we pour out as they are in this early period of development.\u00a0Later, they\u00a0lack the same level of interest in our answers to their constant questions. If\u00a0we aren\u2019t engaged\u00a0now,\u00a0we miss the opportunity to answer\u00a0those\u00a0in-the-moment\u00a0questions altogether.\u00a0God gives us this time to lay the foundation for Him to\u00a0later\u00a0build on.\u00a0By foregoing\u00a0these\u00a0moments,\u00a0we\u00a0lose\u00a0opportunities to\u00a0fulfill our purpose of\u00a0bringing\u00a0our\u00a0children to a greater knowledge of God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nGod\u2019s plan for mothers is for us to instruct our children in His ways,\u00a0to\u00a0love and\u00a0be there for them,\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0set the example for the next generation\u00a0(Deuteronomy 6:4-9;\u00a0Psalm 78:5; Proverbs 22:6;\u00a0Ephesians 6:4). Many of us fail to see that in God\u2019s eyes, being \u201cjust a mom\u201d is enough.\u00a0Not only is it enough, it is a monumental\u00a0undertaking\u00a0that can only be successfully accomplished\u00a0if we partner\u00a0with Him and follow His plan\u00a0to ensure that His Kingdom grows.\u00a0We must take the time to assess our priorities and align them with God\u2019s.\u00a0The key question we must ask ourselves is this:\u00a0Do the decisions I make about\u00a0how I use\u00a0my time give me more\u00a0or fewer\u00a0opportunities to store up God\u2019s Word in the heart of my child\u00a0and teach him\u00a0what he needs to know\u00a0about Jesus?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nOverflowing calendars are not just a problem of working mothers. Moms who stay home with their children can also fall prey to the idea that\u00a0motherhood\u00a0is not enough. Our days can become so filled with activities\u00a0to provide a balanced upbringing for our\u00a0children, that\u00a0we fail to take time to\u00a0actually bring them up. At the end of the day,\u00a0too\u00a0many mothers go to bed without having\u00a0had that focused face-to-face time that all children crave.\u00a0We can become so distracted by doing good things for our children that, like the mother bird, we lose sight of what they\u00a0really<\/b>\u00a0<\/i>need.\u00a0Our children\u2019s most pressing need is not a\u00a0\u201csupermom,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0presiding over the PTA,\u00a0churning out\u00a0Pinterest\u00a0projects,\u00a0and\u00a0volunteering\u00a0in\u00a0all the local charities;\u00a0their most pressing need is a\u00a0mother who is present.\u00a0<\/span>
\nPrioritizing our use of time is\u00a0not the only area of\u00a0life\u00a0in which we\u00a0fail to use\u00a0God\u2019s standard\u00a0as our own. We sometimes fail to measure the true\u00a0successfulness of\u00a0our parenting or\u00a0of\u00a0our children\u2019s accomplishments\u00a0in spiritual terms. Instead,\u00a0we run into the snare\u00a0of thinking success can only be measured in terms of wealth, fame,\u00a0or\u00a0worldly\u00a0achievement. Of course we want our children to be happy,\u00a0to have secure jobs and healthy families, but what is the value in those things if\u00a0their\u00a0souls\u00a0are\u00a0not His (Mark 8:36)? If we have prepared our children for success with tutoring, piano lessons, soccer,\u00a0and SAT prep courses, but have failed to prepare them for a life of\u00a0spiritual warfare\u00a0by giving them the armor they need to be strong soldiers for Christ,\u00a0able\u00a0to stand and defend their faith against Satan\u2019s fiery darts (Ephesians 6:10-17),\u00a0have we actually succeeded\u00a0in motherhood?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen we do\u00a0use each day to\u00a0properly attend our children\u2019s needs and to plant God\u2019s Word in their hearts,\u00a0the results will be amazing.\u00a0Jochebed\u00a0was able to rear\u00a0and teach Moses for\u00a0only\u00a0a few\u00a0short years before he\u00a0was no longer under her care. In that brief\u00a0time, she instilled in him a love for God and for His people.\u00a0Moses\u2019s\u00a0faith was strong enough to choose the right path,\u00a0even\u00a0in the face of all the\u00a0sin\u00a0around him (Hebrews 11:25).\u00a0Jochebed\u2019s\u00a0example shows how strong a foundation\u00a0can be laid\u00a0by taking every opportunity to\u00a0direct even very young children toward\u00a0Heaven. It also reveals, in stark contrast, the lack of,\u00a0and need for,\u00a0such mothers today.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWomen are more than capable of achieving greatness in almost any area of life. Some women juggle a career, family, hobbies, and their spiritual lives with amazing balance.\u00a0The ones who do it well understand their responsibility to train up their children, constantly pointing them towards God,\u00a0and they enlist Him as a partner in parenting. They remember that the life for which they prepare their children has\u00a0little\u00a0to do with grades or income, but is rather the life after this mortal one.\u00a0No matter how full their schedules\u00a0get, they put the most important things\u2013\u2013God and family\u2013\u2013first, even if something else has to drop, temporarily, to make that happen.\u00a0<\/span>
\nCertainly, every family has a different range of needs and personalities. Not\u00a0every mother has the same amount of time to devote to\u00a0each of\u00a0her children. Thus, there is no universal approach\u00a0to motherhood. There is, however, a universal\u00a0need<\/b>\u00a0<\/i>for mothers and a heavenly Father who is calls us to mold our children for Him.\u00a0Take the time to be more present for your children today than you were yesterday.\u00a0If\u00a0you are present every day, be encouraged, knowing that your labor\u00a0is\u00a0crucial to God\u2019s\u00a0kingdom.\u00a0The legacy of a\u00a0godly mother follows her\u00a0well beyond her\u00a0years on this\u00a0earth. We have so little time to mold and shape our children\u2019s\u00a0hearts,\u00a0preparing them for a\u00a0life of service to God in\u00a0the hostile\u00a0world around them. We must constantly, consciously,\u00a0be\u00a0about the business of mothering.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
