\nSeveral years ago when my husband, young daughter,\u00a0and I moved to a new community, we were out to dinner with\u00a0church members who had a seven-year-old daughter.\u00a0While we were visiting, the child looked at me and asked, \u201cSo,\u00a0when are you going to start working for a living?\u201d I was taken\u00a0off guard,\u00a0and as I\u00a0tried\u00a0to think of how to answer such a question, her grandmother quickly answered saying that I could\u00a0\u201cgo to work any time because I used to be a teacher.\u201d\u00a0All these years later, I have never forgotten that awkward moment where my choice to be a homemaker was questioned and devalued.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nSo why\u00a0am\u00a0I\u00a0homemaker? Is it because I have no other career choices? No.\u00a0Is it because cleaning toilets and running errands fulfills me? No.\u00a0Is it the\u00a0salary, benefits,\u00a0and\u00a0paid vacation? No!\u00a0I do\u00a0take care of errands, cleaning,\u00a0meals, laundry, shopping,\u00a0and a host of other jobs that keep the home running smoothly.\u00a0But I could be working full time and paying other people to do those things.\u00a0So why do I do\u00a0I choose to do a\u00a0job\u00a0of hard work and no\u00a0pay that\u00a0is held in contempt by our society?\u00a0<\/span>
\nI do\u00a0it because I love it! It\u2019s that simple.\u00a0I like the word\u00a0homemaker<\/i>.\u00a0It has a connotation that far exceeds a cook and housekeeper.\u00a0It is up to me to\u00a0make<\/b>\u00a0our house into a home.\u00a0I love creating a\u00a0beautiful\u00a0and comfortable\u00a0space\u00a0for my family\u00a0to live in.\u00a0I\u00a0love\u00a0for my husband and children to walk\u00a0in\u00a0the door to find\u00a0a\u00a0good\u00a0dinner\u00a0cooking or\u00a0something delicious\u00a0baking in the oven.\u00a0I get to spend quality and quantity time with the people I love the most.\u00a0I have opportunities to use my talents to\u00a0bless, encourage, and\u00a0teach others.\u00a0<\/span>
\nMaking our home is how I show\u00a0love and care for my\u00a0family.\u00a0Being a homemaker, I\u00a0provide a place\u00a0of security and\u00a0peace where there are kind words and a listening ear.\u00a0I have opportunities to really know each family member,\u00a0which allows me to build up and encourage them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nI\u00a0love that as a homemaker, I\u00a0am a memory maker.\u00a0Our lives\u00a0go by much too quickly.\u00a0How will our children remember growing up in our homes? I want my\u00a0family\u00a0to remember\u00a0the\u00a0fun\u00a0times of laughter and silliness.\u00a0I want them to remember\u00a0the\u00a0holidays when I went all out to\u00a0decorate\u00a0the house\u00a0and make their favorite foods.\u00a0I want them to remember the\u00a0Friday nights\u00a0made into a party with homemade pizza and a movie.\u00a0Most of all, I want them to remember that our commitment to God was first and foremost interwoven into every day, every decision, and every action.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIt isn\u2019t easy to be a homemaker.\u00a0There will be days when we don\u2019t feel that our\u00a0efforts are appreciated by our families, much less those who do not understand our choices.\u00a0I used to joke that someday I would write a book entitled\u00a0When<\/i>\u00a0Will They Call Me Blessed?<\/i>\u00a0based\u00a0on the Proverbs 31 woman.\u00a0I finally got what I had wanted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nHere is an\u00a0excerpt from an email written to me by my husband several years ago:\u00a0<\/span>
\nKim,\u00a0<\/span>
\nI know the kids and I don’t tell you enough how much we rely on you and love you but we do.\u00a0I couldn’t have\u00a0found a better woman to marry\u00a0to help me, and to help our children along this journey.\u00a0The work you have done and the work you do, not only in our family,\u00a0but\u00a0with the kids at\u00a0church,\u00a0is the kind of work that will impact lives long after you are gone.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe may make you feel like you’re invisible from time to time, and as far as people who don’t know us well, you may be.\u00a0But I know, and God knows all the work you do.\u00a0I know better than anyone else in the world how you have made me a better person.\u00a0I couldn’t be who I am without your help.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nYou’re an “architect” and you’re building something beautiful with our family that will outlast both of us.\u00a0When you’re having “one of those days,” just remember Hebrews 6:10.\u00a0<\/span>
