\nIrrespective of his thoughts on the level of\u00a0the\u00a0stock market, Warren Buffett is an unabashed bull on the future of\u00a0the United States of America. America\u00a0enjoys\u00a0a \u201cpolitical and economic system that unleashes human potential to an extraordinary degree\u201d\u00a0(Buffett)<\/span>. Yet, according to him, our country has not\u00a0yet\u00a0reached its full potential. He continues:\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nStill an obstacle remains: Too many women continue to impose limitations on themselves, talking themselves out of achieving their potential . . . . The closer that America comes to fully employing the talents of all its citizens, the greater its output of goods and services will be. We\u2019ve seen what can be accomplished when we use 50% of our human capacity. If you visualize what 100% can do, you\u2019ll join me as an unbridled optimist about America\u2019s future (Buffett).\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nBy employing worldly wisdom, Buffett argues the brightness of America\u2019s economic future lies\u00a0largely in the hands of her female citizens. He urges all\u00a0women\u00a0to stop \u201climiting themselves\u201d\u00a0from reaching\u00a0their \u201cfull potential\u201d; women\u00a0need to continue to come out of their homes, enter the labor force, and add to America\u2019s measured output of goods and\u00a0services, thereby securing\u00a0future\u00a0economic prosperity.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nYet\u00a0Godly wisdom dictates the exact opposite\u00a0approach\u00a0for\u00a0attaining spiritual\u00a0prosperity.\u00a0The apostle Paul writes:\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nThey\u00a0[older women]\u00a0are to teach what is good,
\n4<\/span><\/b>\u202fand so train the young women to love their husbands and children,
\n5<\/span><\/b>\u202fto be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled\u00a0(ESV<\/i>, Tit. 2:3c-5).\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nPaul adds in 1 Timothy 5:14, \u201c
\n14<\/span><\/b>\u202fSo I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nAs we consider these passages, let us apply the Five\u00a0Ws\u00a0to discern the appropriate\u00a0role, if any, for Christian women in the workforce.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWho?<\/b>\u00a0The apostle Paul is clearly concerned with the activities of\u00a0young, married, mothers. Young women are to love their husbands and children (Tit. 2:3c), and young widows ought to marry and bear children (1 Tim. 5:14). Husbands and children are necessarily implied by the texts.\u00a0Consequently, in the absence of directives elsewhere in scripture,\u00a0any\u00a0workplace limitations are binding only on\u00a0young, married, mothers.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhat?<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>Young, married women with children are to be working at home (Tit. 2:5) and\u00a0managing their households (1 Tim. 5:14). David Lipscomb writes of their responsibilities, \u201cThat they be keepers or managers at home; keep a neat, attractive house that will make her husband and children love home. Christian women should be the best of housekeepers and should be models to all who\u00a0know them\u201d\u00a0(Lipscomb)<\/span>. Young, married, mothers are to be homemakers who coordinate and manage the affairs of their households.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhere?<\/b>\u00a0Obviously, working at home\u00a0and managing a household necessitates spending a great deal of time at home.\u00a0Accomplishing these tasks ought to be a primary focus for young, married, mothers. Nevertheless, as these things are accomplished and as time allows,\u00a0enterprising\u00a0women may\u00a0have\u00a0flexibility to add other activities.\u00a0For example, the virtuous\u00a0wife\u00a0of Proverbs 31 continuously fulfilled her responsibilities to her husband and children; however, she also found time to buy a field and plant a vineyard (31:16) and\u00a0to\u00a0sell her wares (31:18, 24).\u00a0Her example shows us it is possible to take on extra tasks\u00a0without neglecting biblical responsibilities due her family.\u00a0This is a matter of priority.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen?<\/b>\u00a0These words penned by the inspired apostle Paul are as valid today as\u00a0they were 2000 years ago. Culture may have changed a great deal since then; however, God\u2019s plan for the family and roles within the family have not changed at all. The lives of young, married, mothers ought to continue to revolve around their God and their families, not their careers; work inside the home should take precedence\u00a0over work outside the home.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhy?<\/b>\u00a0The apostle Paul explains that these things must be so in order \u201cthat the word of God may not be reviled\u201d (Tit. 2:5) and so \u201cthe adversary [has] no occasion for slander\u201d (1 Tim. 5:14). Disregarding plain teachings\u00a0of the Holy Spirit in how we choose to live our lives\u00a0causes\u00a0God\u2019s word to be reviled and blasphemed by others. It provides our enemies occasion to slander us and the cause of Christ. By openly rebelling against the truth,\u00a0even in this teaching,\u00a0we may turn others away from Christ and his soul-saving blood!\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nI fear that many American Christian\u00a0husbands and wives\u00a0are openly rebelling against this basic biblical teaching\u00a0merely for financial\u00a0reasons.\u00a0Brother Wayne Jackson correctly notes:\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nChristian women who have children, and who farm them out to day-care centers and babysitters, simply because they desire a more prosperous lifestyle than they otherwise might have, have little, if any, understanding of the role of wife and mother\u00a0(Jackson)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWarren Buffett lays out the case for his economic optimism for the United States of America. His worldly-wise argument is centered upon more and more women leaving their homes to enter the workforce, thereby increasing gross domestic product (GDP).\u00a0This is, in fact, what we are seeing, even among Christian families.\u00a0God, however,\u00a0would have his daughters do the exact opposite to maximize spiritual prosperity. Under normal circumstances, the apostle Paul commands young, married, mothers to work at home, managing their households. Only when these responsibilities are fulfilled should\u00a0pursuits outside the home\u00a0even\u00a0be entertained.\u00a0<\/span>
