\nIn May 2004,\u00a0Massachusetts became the first state to legalize \u201cgay marriage.\u201d\u00a0Since then,\u00a0eleven\u00a0other states, including\u00a0six\u00a0in the last year,\u00a0and the District of Columbia legalized gay marriage.\u00a0As of April 2013, six\u00a0additional states\u00a0have allowed \u201ccivil unions\u201d for homosexual couples.\u00a0Moreover,\u00a0the Supreme Court is preparing to rule on two cases involving the issue, one regarding Proposition 8 in California and one regarding the U.S. Defense of Marriage Act.\u00a0The political landscape\u00a0regarding homosexuality\u00a0has\u00a0obviously\u00a0changed\u00a0rapidly and\u00a0dramatically.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn September 2012, the ACLU and the Attorney General for the State of Colorado filed complaints against a bakery\u00a0because one of its owners\u00a0declined to sell a wedding cake to a\u00a0same-sex\u00a0couple\u00a0because\u00a0doing so would violate his religious beliefs.\u00a0In April 2013, the\u00a0ACLU and the Attorney\u00a0General\u00a0for the State of Washington\u00a0filed\u00a0similar\u00a0civil actions\u00a0against a florist who refused to provide flowers for\u00a0a gay\u00a0wedding while\u00a0also\u00a0specifically citing her\u00a0Christian\u00a0beliefs.\u00a0These are merely\u00a0two\u00a0examples in a string of\u00a0recent\u00a0legal\u00a0actions\u00a0against Bible-believers\u00a0who expressed their opposition to same-sex unions.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn May 2013,\u00a0Jason Collins, a 12-year veteran of the National Basketball Association, became the first active, openly homosexual athlete in major American sports. His announcement was met with overwhelming public support from the likes of\u00a0Presidents Obama and Clinton\u00a0and sports stars\u00a0Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant.\u00a0In June,\u00a0Bloomberg News<\/i>\u00a0published the results of a national poll indicating that 52% of respondents\u00a0supported\u00a0allowing same-sex couples to marry\u00a0while only\u00a041% opposed.\u00a0Things have changed\u00a0socially as well.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhat are\u00a0Christians\u00a0to\u00a0do in light of the\u00a0dramatic\u00a0changes\u00a0in American\u00a0culture\u00a0regarding homosexuality?\u00a0<\/span>
\nKnow\u00a0<\/i><\/b>t<\/i><\/b>he Truth About\u00a0<\/i><\/b>t<\/i><\/b>he Issue<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen something functions as it is designed to function, it is functioning naturally. No reasonable person will contend that human genitalia are designed for homosexual activity. Males and females are obviously designed to correspond to one another sexually (Genesis\u00a02:18-25, 1:26-28). That is natural. Even if some have a greater proclivity toward same-sex attraction than\u00a0others, whether based on genetics or societal factors, that does not make homoeroticism \u201cnatural.\u201d It is, in fact, outside of the body\u2019s anatomical design.\u00a0<\/span>
\nChristians have\u00a0largely\u00a0been bamboozled\u00a0along with the rest of American society\u00a0regarding the true nature of this\u00a0controversy.\u00a0While there is no biological support for the notion, we have\u00a0heard\u00a0that people are \u201cborn gay\u201d long enough\u00a0that\u00a0many\u00a0now\u00a0believe.\u00a0Of course, no\u00a0one is born engaging in sexual\u00a0activity\u00a0of any kind, and\u00a0absent abuse, small children have no idea what sex is.\u00a0People are not \u201cborn gay.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe\u00a0true\u00a0concern here regards behavior\u00a0rather than\u00a0passing thoughts.\u00a0Once children begin to reach puberty and\u00a0young\u00a0adulthood, they will naturally\u00a0begin to have sexual interests.\u00a0Some of those interests, however,\u00a0might\u00a0be deviant.\u00a0For example,\u00a0some entertain\u00a0thoughts about animals or smaller children, but most\u00a0recognize this\u00a0as aberrant thinking and restrain\u00a0themselves.\u00a0Homoerotic thoughts might\u00a0also\u00a0enter one\u2019s mind naturally, but such thoughts are also\u00a0reprobate,\u00a0and they should\u00a0likewise\u00a0be\u00a0resisted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nSpread\u00a0<\/i><\/b>t<\/i><\/b>he Truth About\u00a0<\/i><\/b>t<\/i><\/b>he Word<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\nToo many\u00a0have no urgency\u00a0regarding this matter, and I fear that we are letting the Lord down.\u00a0Instead of speaking up for Christ,\u00a0we are largely\u00a0are keeping quiet\u00a0at a time\u00a0when\u00a0we\u00a0ought\u00a0to be saying, \u201cWoe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!\u201d\u00a0(Isaiah\u00a05:20).\u00a0We\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0affirming unapologetically, \u201cRighteousness exalteth a nation;\u00a0But\u00a0sin is a reproach to any people\u201d (Proverbs\u00a014:34).\u00a0<\/span>
\nI\u00a0recently\u00a0saw an encouraging instance of a\u00a0person\u00a0speaking out\u00a0against\u00a0homosexuality\u00a0based on his\u00a0belief in God and the Bible.\u00a0In declaring his sexual orientation,\u00a0Jason Collins\u00a0claimed\u00a0that he\u00a0takes\u00a0\u201cthe teachings of Jesus seriously, particularly the ones that touch\u00a0on tolerance and understanding.\u201d\u00a0Chris Broussard, a basketball analyst for ESPN, was asked his thoughts about Collins\u2019 statement and\u00a0offered\u00a0an honest, balanced\u00a0retort:\u00a0<\/span>
\nAnd if you\u2019re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality\u2013\u2013adultery, fornication,\u00a0premarital\u00a0sex between heterosexuals\u2013\u2013whatever it may be, I believe that\u2019s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ. So I would\u00a0not characterize that person as a Christian because I don\u2019t think the Bible would characterize them as a Christian.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nMore\u00a0Christians\u00a0need to speak up like this. We\u00a0cannot be so politically correct that we become spiritually wrong\u00a0through silence. We cannot be so concerned about offending our neighbors that we offend our Lord.\u00a0We\u00a0cannot deceive ourselves by thinking, \u201cIt\u2019s not our place to judge\u201d\u00a0(see John 7:24; Matthew\u00a07:1-5).\u00a0Truly, it\u00a0is not our place to condemn, but\u00a0we\u00a0are duty-bound to spread the\u00a0Truth about what God condemns\u00a0and encourage others to repent\u00a0(Ezekiel\u00a03:17ff;\u00a02 Corinthians\u00a05:11).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nEndure Persecution\u00a0<\/i><\/b>a<\/i><\/b>s\u00a0<\/i><\/b>a<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Christian<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\nJesus was persecuted as He called people in His society to repentance, and the\u00a0apostles were persecuted\u00a0as\u00a0they confronted\u00a0their contemporaries\u00a0with the truth about their spiritual guilt (Acts 4:1-21, 5:17, 5:40, 7:51-58). We should also expect to\u00a0pay a price for faithfully spreading the\u00a0Truth (1 Peter\u00a04:15-16).\u00a0In the current climate, persecution will increasingly come as we spread the truth about homosexuality\u00a0and oppose same-sex unions.\u00a0Persecution\u00a0has always\u00a0come\u00a0as a result of faithfulness\u00a0(John 15:18-21;\u00a0Acts 14:22; 2 Timothy\u00a03:12).\u00a0<\/span>
\nMost Christians in American have no idea what it means to suffer persecution for the name of Christ;\u00a0I am afraid that some of us are going to learn.\u00a0Yesterday\u2019s entreaties for \u201ctolerance\u201d have become brow-beatings for acceptance. Christians will face more lawsuits. Some of us will be forced to undergo \u201csensitivity training.\u201d Some will lose jobs. Others will\u00a0be\u00a0court-martialed out of the military. In the coming days, some of us may actually go to prison for simply saying what the Bible says about homosexuality.\u00a0<\/span>
\nBecause\u00a0Americans have historically self-identified as Christians,\u00a0many\u00a0Christians in America are accustomed to being\u00a0part of a cultural\u00a0majority. We are unaccustomed to\u00a0truly\u00a0standing out, to being\u00a0radically\u00a0different than our neighbors, to being ridiculed\u00a0and called names like\u00a0\u201chomophobic.\u201d In an increasingly sinful environment, though,\u00a0the Lord expects us to stand out (Matthew\u00a05:13-16), and we will need to become more comfortable with\u00a0enduring\u00a0legal,\u00a0social,\u00a0financial, academic,\u00a0and professional\u00a0pressures\u00a0to accept and affirm something God denounces.\u00a0<\/span>
\nLove Those Who Disagree<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\nAs Christians, we know that God condemns homosexual behavior. We must not be afraid to share this truth, and we must not be afraid to deal with the negative reactions that are sure to come. Remember though,\u00a0that\u00a0while we must make it clear that we do not agree with homosexual sin, just like we do not agree with adultery, abortion, child abuse, drug use, lying,\u00a0and\u00a0stealing, we must be respectful and loving in doing so.\u00a0Our goal is always\u00a0to help people and bring people to Christ, not hurt them and run them off to Satan.\u00a0<\/span>
\nEven\u00a0as\u00a0people mistreat us, we\u00a0must\u00a0love them and pray for them and treat them kindly.\u00a0Jesus\u00a0bids us\u00a0to\u00a0\u201clove your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you; that you\u00a0may be sons of your Father who is in\u00a0Heaven\u201d\u00a0(Matthew 5:43).\u00a0Of course, homosexuals are not necessarily our personal enemies or enemies of the church\u00a0because of their sexual sins. However, some will\u00a0attack us and\u00a0try to hinder our work\u00a0when we speak against their sin.\u00a0Still,\u00a0God loves us\u00a0first,\u00a0even when we do not do what we should, so we can\u00a0and must, in turn, love others first, even when they do not do what they should.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe\u00a0do not need to run from homosexuals in our communities, schools,\u00a0places\u00a0of employment.\u00a0Instead, we should affirmatively seek to talk with them, have lunch with them, and\u00a0build\u00a0relationships with them. This may be surprising to some, but this is consistent with the example of Jesus (Matthew\u00a09:10) and the teaching of Paul (1 Corinthians\u00a05:9-13). We should welcome homosexuals into our assemblies, as we would welcome anyone else in need of spiritual healing,\u00a0so that we can expose them to the love of Christ and the Christian family,\u00a0share the message of the cross,\u00a0and call them to repentance and remission of sins. The\u00a0Gospel\u00a0is for all\u00a0(John 3:16;\u00a01 Corinthians\u00a06:9-11).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
