\nI grew up in\u00a0a\u00a0family of medical professionals and consequently\u00a0developed the heart of a caregiver before I could even say the word\u00a0stethoscope<\/i>.\u00a0With my father being a physician\u00a0and my mother\u00a0a nurse,\u00a0I gained a natural appreciation for the human body with its fascinating\u00a0abilities and mechanisms.\u00a0I\u00a0found that I liked the fit and feel of a white lab coat and decided to pursue\u00a0a career in nursing.\u00a0<\/span>
\nEvery facet of creation reflects the wisdom, power, and love of Almighty God, and our earthly bodies are among His most beautiful and awe-inspiring works.\u00a0From the microscopic red blood cell to the\u00a0vast integumentary system,\u00a0the details of our\u00a0human anatomy can only be the product of a divine Creator.\u00a0<\/span>
\nOver the past 17 years, my bedside experience in nursing\u00a0has been primarily with cardiac\u00a0patients.\u00a0The heart is\u00a0an\u00a0extraordinary organ! It begins beating\u00a0twenty-two days\u00a0after conception and does not stop until death.\u00a0Its function affects every system, every tissue, and every organ in our bodies.\u00a0While working\u00a0with patients\u00a0in the early and advanced stages of cardiovascular disease, I developed\u00a0a greater appreciation the body\u2019s innate ability to heal and its built-in responses that compensate when other systems\u00a0fail.\u00a0I took special interest in\u00a0the role of the sympathetic nervous system\u00a0and its\u00a0effect,\u00a0which\u00a0is commonly referred to as the \u201cfight-or-flight\u201d response.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen we find ourselves faced with difficult, dangerous, or stressful situations,\u00a0the\u00a0sympathetic nervous system\u00a0is activated.\u00a0Through a series of nerve\u00a0impulses and\u00a0the subsequent\u00a0release of hormones,\u00a0our bodies experience\u00a0a variety of\u00a0physical\u00a0changes, including\u00a0an increase in heart rate, an increase in blood pressure,\u00a0an increase in sweat production,\u00a0an increase in respiratory rate,\u00a0and pupil dilation.\u00a0These changes are\u00a0designed to help us survive\u00a0threatening\u00a0situations\u00a0by preparing us to either fight for our lives or run for our lives!\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen I consider this amazing God-given capability within our human bodies, I can\u2019t help but recognize a spiritual application for the Christian.\u00a0The Bible describes a type of \u201cfight or flight\u201d response when we, as children of God, are faced with the threat of temptation.\u00a0Confronted\u00a0with certain temptations, we\u00a0must\u00a0stand ready to fight, but there are other situations in which we are simply commanded to\u00a0run<\/b>.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe\u00a0apostle Paul, when writing to the church at Corinth and later in letters to young Timothy, encouraged\u00a0those Christians to run from temptation.\u00a0He instructed\u00a0them to\u00a0flee:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
