\nConditions in Samaria were\u00a0horrific.\u00a0\u00a0Benhadad, king of Syria, had besieged the city and forced a terrible famine.\u00a0 Horrible atrocities were\u00a0taking place.\u00a0 Mother boiled\u00a0and ate\u00a0their own\u00a0children to survive (2 Kings 6:24-29).\u00a0 Their cup of misery and suffering was filled to capacity and overflowing.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nSitting at the city gates\u00a0were\u00a0four lepers\u00a0weighing their options.\u00a0 In desperation, they determined\u00a0to go to the Syrian camp and surrender.\u00a0\u00a0Upon\u00a0arrival, instead of\u00a0a\u00a0hostile\u00a0army\u00a0\u00a0they\u00a0found\u00a0an\u00a0abandoned camp full of\u00a0food, drink and treasure.\u00a0 Rejoicing in their good fortune, they began\u00a0to plunder\u00a0(2 Kings 7:3-8).\u00a0 In the midst of this activity\u00a0we find this\u00a0remarkable statement, ”\u00a0\u2026We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent. If we wait until morning light, some punishment will come upon us. Now therefore, come, let us go and tell the king’s household” (2 Kings 7:9).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn this article, we will examine parallels between the lepers then and Christians\u00a0today.\u00a0 We will examine the consequences of remaining silent\u00a0and\u00a0look at some reasons\u00a0commonly\u00a0offered\u00a0for\u00a0doing so.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nParallel’s<\/b>\u00a0(Then And Now)<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nT<\/i><\/b>here was a famine<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Then, it was a literal famine\u00a0that\u00a0resulted in the lack of\u00a0basic physical necessities requisite to the sustaining of human life.\u00a0 Today, it is a spiritual famine\u00a0resulting\u00a0in a lack of spiritual blessings requisite to the sustaining of spiritual life.\u00a0 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…\u00a0” (Hosea 4:6).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nAn\u00a0<\/i><\/b>abundance<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>was\u00a0<\/i><\/b>freely available<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Then, there was plenty of food, drink, and treasure\u00a0in the abandoned Syrian camp.\u00a0 Today, there is an abundance of spiritual blessings\u00a0freely available\u00a0in Christ\u00a0\u00a0(Ephesians\u00a01:3;\u00a0Revelation 22:17).\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nSome<\/i><\/b>\u00a0found what they needed<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Then, the lepers found\u00a0physical blessings\u00a0in the Syrian camp.\u00a0 Today, those who\u00a0obey\u00a0the Gospel\u00a0and remain faithful\u00a0are recipients of God’s spiritual blessings (1 John 1:7-9).\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nAction<\/i><\/b>\u00a0was required on the part of the recipient<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0Then, the lepers had to\u00a0leave\u00a0where they were (the city gates)\u00a0and\u00a0travel to where the blessings were (the Syrian camp).\u00a0 People today must make\u00a0a\u00a0willful decision to\u00a0abandon\u00a0sin (i.e. repent, Luke 13:3)\u00a0and\u00a0go to where God’s spiritual blessings\u00a0are – in Christ (Galatians 3:27).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nHere the similarities end.\u00a0 Then, the lepers realized what was right and acted accordingly.\u00a0 They reasoned that punishment\u00a0awaited\u00a0if they remained silent.\u00a0 They\u00a0knew\u00a0it was wrong to feast on the riches\u00a0of\u00a0the Syrian camp while their\u00a0countrymen\u00a0died of starvation\u00a0and\u00a0determined to share the good news of their discovery.\u00a0 Today,\u00a0many Christians fail to act\u00a0so\u00a0wisely.\u00a0 The fact remains that today is a day of good news.\u00a0 Yet often\u00a0God’s people\u00a0remain silent as\u00a0people all around are dying of spiritual starvation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nMake no\u00a0mistake,\u00a0there are grievous consequences for remaining willfully silent!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nThree Consequences Of Remaining Silent<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe break the direct commandment of God<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost,\u00a0teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…”\u00a0\u00a0(Matthew 28:19-20, KJV).\u00a0 Observing all things certainly includes\u00a0the first imperatives\u00a0–\u00a0to “go ye” and ‘teach.”\u00a0\u00a0This has\u00a0been\u00a0commanded<\/i>, not suggested.\u00a0\u00a0There is no way to\u00a0fully<\/i>\u00a0comply by remaining silent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe fail in our mission as\u00a0<\/i><\/b>God’s people<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous\u00a0light\u00a0” (1 Peter 2:9).\u00a0 As God’s own special people, we are commanded to proclaim the praises of God.\u00a0 It is\u00a0self\u00a0evident that such cannot be accomplished by remaining silent.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe w<\/i><\/b>i<\/i><\/b>ll answer to God for our failing<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0”\u00a0Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from\u00a0My\u00a0mouth, and give them warning from Me\u00a0” (Ezekiel 3:17).\u00a0\u00a0Verse 18\u00a0warns of\u00a0the consequences.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If Ezekiel\u00a0failed to warn the people, their blood\u00a0would\u00a0be required at\u00a0his\u00a0hands.\u00a0\u00a0Today, you and I are\u00a0God’s appointed watchmen.\u00a0 If we chose to remain silent we will be held accountable for our failure.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nGiven these clear and compelling consequences, why\u00a0are so many remaining\u00a0silent?\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nReasons\u00a0<\/b>Offered<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nImmaturity<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Many, through their own negligence, have failed to put forth the required effort to “grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).\u00a0 In a very real and tragic sense, they have voluntarily returned to spiritual Samaria and are subjecting themselves to a state of spiritual starvation.\u00a0 To parallel their plight to that of the lepers, they have chosen to sit at the gates and die (Romans 6:23).\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nFear<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0The fearful are the first group mentioned as having, “their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone\u2026\u201d (Revelation\u00a021:8).\u00a0 Paul reminds us,\u00a0\u201cGod has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord\u201d (2 Timothy\u00a01:7-8).\u00a0\u00a0Christians are not to fear what man may say or do to them (Matthew 10:28).\u00a0 Rather, we are to\u00a0”\u00a0Fear God and keep His commandments\u201d (Ecclesiastes\u00a012:13).\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nDiscouragement<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Many are discouraged by\u00a0the thought of being rejected (whether\u00a0real or imagined).\u00a0 God’s universal law of sowing and reaping\u00a0solves the dilemma.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cDo not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap\u201d (Galatians\u00a06:7).\u00a0 The farmer\u00a0knows\u00a0that not\u00a0every seed planted will bring forth produce.\u00a0\u00a0He does not\u00a0compensate by refusing to sow, but by sowing in abundance!\u00a0 “\u2026\u00a0He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.\u00a0” (2 Corinthians 9:6).\u00a0 To convert more, we must teach more!\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nEach of\u00a0these\u00a0“reasons”\u00a0are\u00a0symptoms of\u00a0a\u00a0greater issue – apathy!\u00a0\u00a0The term “Christian” is a verb (an action word)\u00a0not\u00a0of a noun (a label we wear).\u00a0\u00a0The sooner we realize and accept this fact, the\u00a0more faithful we will be!\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nConclusion<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nIf ever there was a day of good news, the time\u00a0is\u00a0now!\u00a0\u00a0 We have a better hope (Hebrews 7:19), have been purified with better sacrifices (Hebrews 9:23), serve beneath a better covenant with better promises (Hebrews 8:6) and have prepared\u00a0for us\u00a0a better and\u00a0enduring\u00a0possession\u00a0– heaven!\u00a0(Hebrews 10:34; c.f. John 14:1-3).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0God has promised to be with and bless our efforts (Matthew 28:20; Isaiah 55:11).\u00a0\u00a0It is a fundamental\u00a0truth\u00a0that\u00a0to whom much is given, much\u00a0is\u00a0required (Luke\u00a012:48).\u00a0 Let us be as the lepers\u00a0at Samaria\u00a0and refuse to remain silent!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
