\nSpace shuttles reach astounding speeds to carry men to outer space. Hurricanes are able to produce massive amounts of energy that lift the seas off the ocean floors. Tornados cause the loss of property by tearing\u00a0houses and buildings to shreds.\u00a0However, the power of the tongue remains unmatched. James compares the power of the tongue to the influence\u00a0a\u00a0tiny\u00a0rudder has on\u00a0a great\u00a0ship. This small object is able to steer large ships through the paths of the sea. He then warns\u00a0us of the tongue, a small member of the body,\u00a0and the\u00a0great\u00a0danger that it can bring about.\u00a0\u201cBut the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly\u00a0evil, full of deadly poison\u201d\u00a0(James 3:8).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nThough James writes that no man can tame the tongue, this does not mean that we cannot control it. To believe so would be contrary to the\u00a0Word.\u00a0So what does James mean?\u00a0He is simply warning us of the danger that is ever\u00a0present is the tongue.\u00a0Because the danger of the\u00a0tongue\u00a0is ever present, we\u00a0must always be on our guard.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe tongue is a world of iniquity (James 3:6). With so much power in the tongue, we must be careful with how we use it. In a society that demands little to no control over our words, this can be a struggle among Christians today regardless of age.\u00a0It is easy to get caught up in the lying that goes\u00a0on at\u00a0school or the gossiping among friends. Both of these acts are sinful.\u00a0John writes in Revelation\u00a021:8\u00a0that liars will have no part in Heaven.\u00a0Furthermore,\u00a0in Ephesians 4:25, Paul commands us (through\u00a0the\u00a0inspiration of the Holy Spirit) to speak only truth.\u00a0In 1\u00a0Timothy 5:13, Paul writes\u00a0that we should not be \u201ctattlers\u201d or \u201cbusybodies.\u201d\u00a0But these are not the only acts\u00a0concerning the tongue\u00a0that Christians\u00a0must avoid. No Christian should\u00a0ever\u00a0tear\u00a0others\u00a0down (Ephesians\u00a04:25),\u00a0speak angry words\u00a0(Proverbs\u00a015:1), or\u00a0use foul language (Colossians\u00a03:8).\u00a0<\/span>
\nThere are, however, many ways in which Christians may use their tongues for\u00a0good and for the glory of God.\u00a0It is through the use of our tongues that we can help our fellow laborers in Christ.\u00a0In Ephesians 4:29, Paul writes to us telling us not to tear others down but goes on to say\u00a0that we should use our words to edify each other.\u00a0Not only are we to encourage one another,\u00a0but\u00a0we should teach others about Christ.\u00a0Mark records the words of Christ when our Lord said,\u00a0\u201cGo\u00a0into all the world\u00a0and preach the\u00a0Gospel to every creature\u201d (Mark 16:15).\u00a0Even in a world with great\u00a0advancements in technology, there is still a place for our tongues in saving souls.\u00a0As Christians, we should \u201cwarn the unruly\u201d (1 Thessalonians 5:14), speak of our faith (Romans 10:9-10), and honor God (Hebrews\u00a013:15).\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe world has given us the false idea that one\u00a0may\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0Christian\u00a0part\u00a0of the time and the other part he\/she\u00a0may\u00a0act just like the world. James clearly condemns\u00a0this behavior.\u00a0\u201cOut of the same mouth proceed\u00a0blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not\u00a0to be\u00a0so.\u00a0Does\u00a0a fountain send\u00a0forth\u00a0fresh\u00a0water and bitter from the same opening?\u00a0Can\u00a0a\u00a0fig tree, my brethren, bear olives\u00a0or a grapevine bear\u00a0figs?\u00a0Thus\u00a0no\u00a0spring\u00a0yields\u00a0both\u00a0salt water and fresh\u201d\u00a0(James 3:10-12).\u00a0Can a Christian act like a follower of the world?\u00a0The answer to this question is obvious\u2013\u2013most certainly not.\u00a0A Christian will either imitate Christ (1\u00a0Corinthinans\u00a011:1) or imitate the world. James is saying\u00a0(again, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit)\u00a0that we must\u00a0decide\u00a0what to do with our tongue.\u00a0\u201cLet the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in\u00a0Your\u00a0sight, O\u00a0Lord, my strength, and my\u00a0Redeemer\u201d\u00a0<\/i>(Psalm 19:14).\u00a0It is your choice. What will you\u00a0decide?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
