\nMost are familiar with the\u00a0children’s song “O Be Careful,\u00a0Little Eyes.” The words remind us, “O be careful,\u00a0little eyes,\u00a0what you see; O be careful,\u00a0little eyes,\u00a0what you see; There’s a Father up above looking down in\u00a0tender\u00a0love; So, be careful,\u00a0little eyes what you see.” The words are simple that even a child can understand them,\u00a0but the message teaches a deep truth. The eyes must be kept guarded from the evil influences of the world.The eye is a complex organ.\u00a0It\u00a0is designed to permit the interpretation of colors, shapes and the dimensions of objects. It\u00a0is the organ that provides\u00a0the sense of sight. Sight is made possible when light\u00a0is reflected\u00a0off of an object and is then transferred through the eye.\u00a0The eye transforms light into electrical signals.\u00a0Those electrical signals\u00a0are\u00a0interpreted by the brain,\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0visual image\u00a0is conceived.\u00a0Therefore, we do not see with our eyes but with our brains. It is important to note that the eye cannot see\u00a0objects when light is\u00a0absent.\u00a0Light is necessary for sight. So it may be deduced that for one to see spiritual matters, spiritual light is necessary.Jesus said,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nDo not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.\u00a0\u201cThe lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.\u00a0But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0that darkness!\u00a0\u00a0\u201cNo one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”\u00a0(Matthew 6:19-24, cf. Luke 11:34-36).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn His sermon,\u00a0Jesus emphasized the great importance\u00a0of\u00a0placing full trust in God\u00a0and\u00a0completely submitting to His will.\u00a0Many in the world seek after corruptible riches. It is those riches that often draw our attention away from serving and seeking God. When the eye sees the pleasures of the world,\u00a0it often creates a desire for\u00a0the things of the world. This desire is called “covetousness.”\u00a0And covetousness is idolatry.\u00a0Paul wrote, “Therefore\u00a0put to death\u00a0your members which are upon the earth:\u00a0fornication, uncleanness,\u00a0passion, evil\u00a0desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5).\u00a0A wise man will seek after an\u00a0eternal reward\u00a0and not the fading pleasures of the world (Hebrews 11:24-25).\u00a0The light and vision\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0mind\u00a0are transferred\u00a0through the eye. The eye\u00a0stockpiles\u00a0for the body the benefits of\u00a0light and\u00a0vision.\u00a0Many emulate and desire what they see. But if the eye is diseased and corrupted, the desires of\u00a0the heart will be obscured and corrupted. If the eye is desirous of evil things,\u00a0the ability of clear vision for spiritual things is lost and the whole body is full of darkness.Jesus said, “Therefore, when your eye is good, your\u00a0whole body is also full of light” (Luke 11:34).\u00a0 The\u00a0completely focused\u00a0eye\u00a0cannot\u00a0look at two\u00a0objects\u00a0with the same desire\u00a0at the same time.\u00a0One object will overshadow the other. James wrote, “A double-minded man is unstable in all\u00a0his\u00a0ways” (James 1:8). One cannot fill his eyes with evil and expect\u00a0it\u00a0to reflect righteousness\u00a0in his mind. Jesus said,<\/b>\u00a0\u201cWhat comes out of a man, that defiles a man.\u202f<\/b>For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,\u202f<\/b>thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride,\u00a0foolishness.\u202f<\/b>All these evil things come from within and defile a man.\u201d\u00a0(Mark 7:20-23).\u00a0One’s morals\u00a0and motives are expressed\u00a0in his will and intent.\u00a0One’s\u00a0will and\u00a0intent is governed by that\u00a0which he places in his mind\u00a0(Romans 12:1-2).\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe eye provides guidance\u00a0for\u00a0our direction in life. If one does not look where he is going,\u00a0he is likely to stumble. Jesus said, “Can the blind lead the blind?\u00a0Will they not both fall into the ditch?”\u00a0(Luke 6:39).\u00a0A wise man will focus his eyes on seeking first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
