\nI have\u00a0a good\u00a0father;\u00a0I call him Pop, and\u00a0he\u00a0is a blessing.\u00a0The apostle Paul tells us\u00a0in Ephesians 6:4,\u00a0\u201c<\/span><\/b>Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,\u202fbut bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0It doesn\u2019t take long to look around and see all the anger, lack of discipline,\u00a0Bible\u00a0illiteracy, and children who\u00a0don\u2019t know God\u00a0to see\u00a0that we need fathers to step up to God\u2019s mandate.\u00a0<\/span>
\nPaul also tells us in Ephesians 6:2,\u00a0\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u201cHonor your father\u2026\u201d.\u00a0I want to\u00a0honor my Pop for these reasons:\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe is a Christian<\/b>.\u00a0He was baptized for remission of sins, and desperately loved the Lord.\u00a0He is not perfect, but forgiven.\u00a0I have seen him respond to the invitation to confess sin.\u00a0He was quick to say, \u201cI am wrong, I am sorry, and I love you.\u201d\u00a0I have always respected him for his transparency.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe disciplined me<\/b>.\u00a0I remembering memorizing and becoming a\u00a0living example of Proverbs 23:13\u00a0which states,\u00a0\u201cDo not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.\u201d\u00a0He did not spare the rod, and I did not die.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe encourages me<\/b>.\u00a0Pop does a mean\u00a0\u201cTarzan\u00a0yell\u201d.\u00a0At my ballgames I would hear him let out that yell when I did something good.\u00a0It was his way of saying \u201cThat\u2019s my\u00a0boy.\u201d\u00a0A couple of years\u00a0ago\u00a0one of my preaching mentors\u00a0was\u00a0killed.\u00a0The next morning\u00a0when I looked out in the audience\u00a0Pop\u00a0was there.\u00a0He made the two-hour trip to support me even though he was not physically well.\u00a0When I need him, he is there.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe is good to people<\/b>.\u00a0Pop took me along with him to visit others, take people food,\u00a0help\u00a0people move,\u00a0sing with him at funerals,\u00a0and\u00a0serve other people in so many\u00a0ways.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe has persevered<\/b>.\u00a0Through his life\u00a0he has endured wounding\u00a0in\u00a0war,\u00a0disability, divorce, and cancer,\u00a0yet\u00a0he is still faithful.\u00a0He lives out\u00a0\u201cbe\u00a0thou faithful unto death\u2026\u201d\u00a0Revelation\u00a02:10.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe laughs and smiles<\/b>.\u00a0He has a contagious laugh and a smile that blesses him and those around him.\u00a0His joyful heart truly is good medicine (Proverbs 17:22).\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe believes in prayer<\/b>.\u00a0Several years ago when I was in college and struggling,\u00a0I received a letter from him telling me that he loved me and was proud of me.\u00a0He told me that whatever profession that I chose he would support me, but he\u00a0said he\u00a0was glad that I was considering ministry and that he had been praying that I would become\u00a0a preacher all of my life.\u00a0There are very few times\u00a0when he and I talk\u00a0that he doesn\u2019t ask me to pray for him and others, and also lets me know he is praying for me.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHe loves the Bible<\/b>.\u00a0He is a daily Bible reader, and I have seen him read his Bible throughout my childhood even now in adulthood.\u00a0If I were to go to his house now, his Bible and Bible class book would be open on his kitchen table.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWith\u00a0all the fathers in the world,\u00a0I am glad\u00a0that\u00a0the Lord saw fit to give me\u00a0Pop.\u00a0A couple of years ago, I chose\u00a0to write a letter to tell Pop\u00a0how much I love him and why I love him.\u00a0Pop\u00a0has it framed and on the wall.\u00a0I have never regretted telling\u00a0Pop\u00a0how much I loved him in writing.\u00a0So many times we wait until a\u00a0funeral to say\u00a0good\u00a0things about people who we love.\u00a0Make the time to write a note to your father or someone who taught you what it means to be a father.\u00a0It will bless you and them greatly.\u00a0It will be the greatest Father\u2019s Day gift they have ever received.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
