\nCurrently in this country an effort is underway to improve\u00a0science\u00a0education. This entails a comprehensive rewrite of the curriculum from kindergarten to twelve grade of high school.\u00a0Twenty-six states are involved in this effort and will use their guide a final document to come out this March.\u00a0Textbook publishers and other resources will be heavily involved in promoting their materials for that all elusive contract.\u00a0The amount of money that is involved is only superseded by the direct influence these materials will have on the developing minds of school children.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThere is more to this story.\u00a0Unknown to many citizens in these states is the continued\u00a0push\u00a0to promote Darwinian evolution in the science classroom.\u00a0The overall mission is to foster a secular atheistic worldview in the culture by using the classroom to indoctrinate young minds and win them over to their cause.\u00a0It seems almost diabolical,\u00a0but for the most part people are onboard with this because they know our country needs help and\u00a0they\u00a0trust schools\u00a0and elected officials to do the right thing.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHere is the concern.\u00a0In the new curriculum evolution will be a major theme in the life sciences.\u00a0Here is a direct quote from the foundational framework idea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nBiological evolution explains both the unity and the diversity of species and provides a unifying principle for the history and diversity of life on Earth. Biological evolution is supported by extensive scientific evidence ranging from the fossil record to genetic relationships among species. Researchers continue to use new and different techniques, including DNA and protein sequence analyses, to test and further their understanding of evolutionary relationships. Evolution, which is continuous and ongoing, occurs when natural selection acts on the genetic variation in a population and changes the distribution of traits in that population gradually over multiple generations or more rapidly after sudden changes in conditions, which can lead to the extinction of species.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/i>In case you missed it,\u00a0evolution is presented as a fact of science.\u00a0It has been proven already,\u00a0and continued research is being done which will confirm this position.\u00a0<\/span>
\nYou should be alarmed and concerned.\u00a0This text (along with others) has been used to develop the March document.\u00a0Each state has agreed to certain terms about adopting this curriculum.\u00a0For example Georgia was asked to adopt in whole the new material.\u00a0The rest of this article gives some background and what has been done and can be done about this important matter.\u00a0<\/span>
\nLet us go back to the beginning.\u00a0When our nation was founded,\u00a0a belief in God was a core value.\u00a0There was no separation between church and state.\u00a0Many people believed the country owed its existence to the God of the Bible and recognized Christ and the Christian world and life view as the pattern for all society from the home to the government.\u00a0Things went well and the nation grew and prospered.\u00a0For whatever reasons, in our wealth and prosperity, leaders as well as citizens started stepping back from the commitment to this\u00a0Biblical worldview.\u00a0I am not saying that every American went to church, taught on mission fields, or lived\u00a0unstained\u00a0moral lives.\u00a0But they supported and lived within the framework provided by an unyielding trust that God\u2019s way should rule in all society including government and,\u00a0yes,\u00a0the schools.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhat happened?\u00a0The school was taken over.\u00a0The efforts of Horace Mann and John Dewey made a significant impact on how our current educational system came to be.\u00a0The rise of atheism in the culture through adoption of naturalism, humanism,\u00a0and empiricism influence the thinking of leaders in the educational enterprise.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThat is sad.\u00a0The reason is that education was working well and on a solid foundation.\u00a0What was taught made sense of human experience and people made direct connections with the needs of society.\u00a0For example many citizens were more literate, cogent in their reasoning, and fluent in writing then many are today even with the modern university.\u00a0What most people do not know is that education was being hijacked or co-opted by men and groups that wanted to insert their worldview into the culture.\u00a0They tried other ways but landed on and infiltrated the educational establishment.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThey are still there and in full force.\u00a0Most citizens are concerned about the modern county school system.\u00a0They know something is not right but cannot put their fingers\u00a0on it.\u00a0Johnny comes home talking about accepting homosexuality, or lack of sexual purity,\u00a0or breakdown of discipline,\u00a0or why they need to be involved in feeding the homeless.\u00a0Most parents\u00a0put up with it.\u00a0Those who put more research and thought into the matter remove the child and put them in a private school or home school.\u00a0<\/span>
\nThat is where we are today.\u00a0Now about the textbooks.\u00a0For most of this history,\u00a0the textbook was the curriculum.\u00a0Parents who wanted to know what was taught could just read the textbook.\u00a0States that changed curriculum needed new textbooks,\u00a0so publishers would work to meet this need.\u00a0Larger states needed more books,\u00a0and over time publishers focused on developing materials for these states.\u00a0They made much money and,\u00a0over time with more connections,\u00a0grew in influence.\u00a0Those in upper educational leadership making decisions about curriculum had a lot of power over content.\u00a0How it came to be is\u00a0another\u00a0story,\u00a0but that it is this way now is a reality people need to know.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn short,\u00a0reform movements and legislation required writers and developers to make new materials.\u00a0These writers were influenced by their own worldviews, the need for their product to sell, and the approval of the educational power structure.\u00a0At first,\u00a0public approval was important but now, sadly is not a factor in the decision making process.\u00a0A good starting point would be the 1958 National Defense Education Act.\u00a0A good recent example would be the 2011\u2013\u2013A Framework of K-12 Science Education by the National Academies of Science.\u00a0<\/span>
\nEnter Christians4Science.\u00a0Members of the Villa Rica\u00a0church of Christ in Villa Rica, Georgia began this work as an effort to address this very issue.\u00a0Somebody needed to something about what was happening in our local schools.\u00a0Children of members were going to school and being taught, among other things,\u00a0that\u00a0the universe came about from the Big Bang and they are\u00a0descendents\u00a0of monkeys.\u00a0Our Bibles said one thing,\u00a0and they were taught the opposite.\u00a0Both could not be right; any thinking person could see that.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIt began in a Bible class series called \u201cDinosaurs and the Bible.\u201d\u00a0The preacher presented what the Bible taught and I presented what science had to say.\u00a0We tried our best to do our own research including visiting museums and reading works from Apologetics Press, Institute for Creation Research,\u00a0and Answers in Genesis.\u00a0Needless to say much interest was generated in these classes.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIt was my belief that Bible classes should always lead to actions.\u00a0Christianity is\u00a0a learning, doing, and teaching religion.\u00a0Ezra is a good example\u00a0(Ezra 7:10).\u00a0We decided to confront our local school board member.\u00a0She was very sympathetic and we were encouraged.\u00a0We were given five minutes to speak at a local school board and did so.\u00a0Enthusiastically received,\u00a0we were excited.\u00a0We were naive.\u00a0Nothing was done\u2013\u2013words given in place of action.\u00a0We did research for them and came up with a statement they could adopt and publish.\u00a0It was so clear and reasonable what we wanted done.\u00a0Undaunted,\u00a0we approached the board again and spoke requesting an update.\u00a0A document was passed around to members and we were told,\u00a0\u201cNothing can be done for legal reasons,\u201d and \u201cWe must do what the State says;\u00a0you will have to work at the state level.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nNow about the\u00a0biology textbook.\u00a0We obtained a copy of the\u00a0biology textbook used in our county.\u00a0We also purchased a book called\u00a0Evolution Exposed<\/i>\u00a0that directly documented, exposed, and refuted the portions of this text teaching Darwinian\u00a0evolution.\u00a0This book was handed to each member of the board in person by the preacher.\u00a0<\/span>
\nTime went on\u00a0with\u00a0more reporting in the local paper, and nothing done.\u00a0Due to my success and experience in math education,\u00a0I was asked to be part of a new\u00a0science\u00a0team in Georgia by the head science coordinator at the department of education.\u00a0In the first meeting I became aware of what is called The Next Generation of Science Standards\u00a0with\u00a0Georgia as a leading state, and that Darwinian\u00a0evolution was going to play a major part in effort.\u00a0<\/span>
\nSince that time in November of 2011,\u00a0much has been done by Christians4Science to confront this issue.\u00a0We researched, documented, and wrote a critical refutation of the content.\u00a0We contacted and tactfully confronted all the key people behind this effort included the President of the National Academy of Sciences.\u00a0We developed a website called Christians4Science.com and branded our effort with a publishing logo.\u00a0We developed an email communication tool and networked with other churches and organizations.\u00a0We produced short\u00a0YouTube videos to help get the message out.\u00a0Atlanta channel 2\u00a0News did two stories about the work.\u00a0Our effort to get Christians involved in giving public feedback was broadcast locally, statewide,\u00a0and in other states as well.\u00a0<\/span>
\nLessons learned: Evolution is bad news.\u00a0Darwinism is a futile system of unbelieving thought.\u00a0We were able to confront two presidents of American Atheism Inc.,\u00a0and they were unable to refute our Bible-based presentation.\u00a0Evolution is not scientific.\u00a0It never was and never will be.\u00a0We have an audio file on this very topic.\u00a0Evolution must be confronted at the worldview\u00a0level,\u00a0otherwise you will be sucked into the endless game of \u201cOur scientists are smarter or more promising then yours are.\u201d\u00a0Find the political structure and employ citizen outcry.\u00a0Get your message out.\u00a0Utilize the media but do not rely on them.\u00a0They do not always get the story right.\u00a0Do not ask for creation to be taught.\u00a0If you do,\u00a0you will have to remove several Supreme Court justices and spend 1 billion in court fees and 10 years in litigation.\u00a0Arm yourselves with the facts.\u00a0You are intimidated mainly due to lack of accurate information and not thinking deeply or thinking through.\u00a0You need help to\u00a0think<\/b>.\u00a0Do not think you can be neutral and not use your Bible.\u00a0You just gave up if you do.\u00a0You are not smart enough but you know someone who is.\u00a0One more\u00a0lesson:\u00a0The unbeliever has been at his work for a long time and has gotten much help.\u00a0One effort by one church for one year is not enough.\u00a0We need more people, more resources, and continued effort.\u00a0With God\u2019s blessing we can do much good.\u00a0We must be engaged and in it for the long haul.\u00a0Winning the culture back for God includes\u00a0the school system and textbooks.\u00a0<\/span>
