\nThe view that the Bible needs amended or updated to keep in step with modern moral beliefs and practices is nothing new. Every generation engages in this debate. The participants change and the terms are tweaked,\u00a0but the basic views remain the same. One recent example is Piers Morgan of CNN. In an interview with Rick Warren,\u00a0Piers\u00a0Morgan,\u00a0trying to advance\u00a0the cause of same-sex marriage,\u00a0said, \u201cThe Bible and constitution were well intentioned but they are basically inherently flawed; hence the need to amend them. My point to you about gay rights for example:\u00a0it\u2019s time for an amendment to the Bible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\nIs the Bible \u201cbasically inherently flawed\u201d?\u00a0Is it \u201ctime for an amendment to the Bible\u201d?\u00a0The answer\u00a0to both\u00a0is\u00a0\u201cNo\u201d for the following reasons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nFirst, consider the nature of truth.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0The real issue and question in this ongoing debate is\u00a0whether there is such a thing as absolute objective truth.\u00a0\u00a0Those who deny that\u00a0absolute truth exists\u00a0remind us of\u00a0Pilate\u2019s retort to Jesus, \u201cWhat is truth?\u201d (John 18:38). Yet to deny the objective nature of truth is to simultaneously affirm it. It\u2019s the \u201cI know you cannot know anything\u201d quandary. We would ask, \u201cIs it objectively true that there is no objective truth?\u201d The notion itself is self-contradictory. If truth in general, and moral truth specifically, are both relative and subjective; several questions are in order. Who will decide what will comprise the \u201clist\u201d of what is \u201ctrue\u201d or \u201cmoral\u201d?\u00a0How will it be decided? Will the list be binding on others;\u00a0if so,\u00a0why or why not? Any \u201ctruth\u201d proposed by men, apart from a \u201chigher authority\u201d\u00a0(e.g.\u00a0God),\u00a0would by its very nature be subjective and relative. We believe there is absolute objective truth and that that truth\/law is contained in the Bible (John 14:6; 16:13; 17:17; 1 John 1:5-7; etc.). If this is the case,\u00a0then appeals to amend the Bible are unwarranted,\u00a0and in addition would not solve the problem.\u00a0<\/span>
\nSecond<\/i><\/b>, consider the origin and nature of the Bible.<\/i><\/b>\u00a0If the Bible is from God,\u00a0then the\u00a0nature<\/b>\u00a0of the moral laws and principles found in it can be established by the\u00a0nature<\/b>\u00a0of the God who gave them. God is infinite in all of His attributes,\u00a0including holiness and righteousness. He is without sin,\u00a0and as such He is holy and thus set apart from sin and wickedness (Habbukah1:13;\u00a01 John1:5f; etc.). He is also immutable or unchanging in His nature (Heb.6:17f; Jas.1:17; etc.). God\u2019s moral laws proceed from His very nature. One should\u00a0therefore, expect those moral laws and principles to possess the same nature as the Law Giver. To illustrate: God cannot lie; His\u00a0nature\u00a0<\/b>prohibits it (Titus 1:2). Thus God\u2019s moral law against lying, as well as all the others, is absolute. They do not and cannot change any more than the nature of the One who gave them. Therefore the call for amendment would be pointless.\u00a0<\/span>
\nLast,<\/i><\/b>\u00a0consider the Bible\u2019s\u00a0<\/i><\/b>reliability<\/i><\/b>.<\/b>\u00a0The claim is often made that the purity and integrity of the\u00a0Biblical text has been so corrupted throughout the centuries through copying, alterations,\u00a0and revisions that we can have no confidence in what it originally\u00a0said. Therefore, we are told,\u00a0to bind any of its moral laws or precepts would be unjustified. While not within the scope of this brief\u00a0article,\u00a0it should be noted that no documents of antiquity have the wealth of evidence to give a clearer picture of what the original documents read than the\u00a0Biblical text. To reject the Bible on the grounds of \u201ccorruption of the text\u201d is to reject all writings of antiquity. Since the text has remained remarkably pure and reliable,\u00a0modern day amendment would again be unnecessary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nFrom my observation,\u00a0those who claim the Bible is flawed don\u2019t have a \u201cfaith\u201d problem but a \u201cmoral\u201d problem. In other words, their real problem with the Bible is rooted in their immoral lifestyles\u00a0that\u00a0contradict the high moral standards upheld in the Bible.\u00a0Therefore, the Bible is a constant reminder of their sinful state.\u00a0So, rather than changing their behavior, they have chosen to attempt to change the Bible (Romans1:18-32).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nThere is no need for an amended Bible, for it is not flawed.\u00a0 It is sufficient to thoroughly equip us unto every good work (2\u00a0Timothy 3:17).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
