\n\u201cIsn\u2019t it wonderful\u00a0to know that Granny is feeling better, Kate?\u201d\u00a0Driving down the road,\u00a0I glanced back at my\u00a0then\u00a0four-year-old daughter sitting in her car\u00a0seat, looking out\u00a0the back seat window,\u00a0with a\u00a0half\u00a0nelson hold on\u00a0a smartly dressed\u00a0stuffed leopard. I quickly identified the moment as a teachable one and\u00a0I jumped in with both feet!\u00a0\u201cKate, remember how we talked to God and prayed\u00a0for Granny to get better?\u00a0Well,\u00a0God answered our prayers!\u00a0We need to thank Him for taking care of Granny.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe rear view mirror revealed a slight change in Kate\u2019s status: a sweet smile playing around the corners of her mouth as she thought about her beloved Granny.\u00a0Feeling like the moment was going well, I continued, really wanting to drive home the idea of God answering our\u00a0prayers..\u201cKate? You know that\u00a0we are talking to God\u00a0when we pray\u00a0and He\u00a0will\u00a0answer our prayers;\u00a0we just might not always\u00a0get the answer we want.\u201d\u00a0I\u00a0paused briefly\u00a0before heading into the\u00a0\u201csometimes yes\/sometimes no\/sometimes not right now\u201d portion of my lesson, when Kate suddenly turned from the window, eyes wide with\u00a0excitement and\u00a0sudden revelation,\u00a0\u201cMommy! God just told me that I could have some gum!\u201d\u00a0Oh, dear.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nThus the\u00a0teachable \u201cmoment\u201d became the teachable \u201cafternoon\u00a0while running errands.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\nAs a Christian, I know that the Bible is inspired of God\u00a0(2 Timothy 3:16).\u00a0I\u00a0recognize\u00a0that God speaks to me, not through any supernatural means,\u00a0but\u00a0through my own study and understanding of the\u00a0Scriptures.\u00a0I\u00a0understand\u00a0that when I read letters from Paul,\u00a0or\u00a0psalms of David,\u00a0or one\u00a0of the\u00a0Gospels,\u00a0or any one of the 66 books of the Bible,\u00a0I am reading the words of God Himself as He,\u00a0through the Holy Spirit,\u00a0guided\u00a0the hand of\u00a0each writer\u00a0(2 Peter 1:20-21).\u00a0I\u00a0just\u00a0need to be sure that I am teaching this to\u00a0others, as well.\u00a0<\/span>
\nI love reading books to\u00a0my children.\u00a0It\u2019s one of my favorite bedtime rituals at our house\u00a0and we enjoy all types: fiction, fantasy, adventure, you name it!\u00a0It is important though, as they grow\u00a0older,\u00a0that\u00a0children realize\u00a0the difference between the book\u00a0about a magical world that exists within a rabbit hole\u00a0and the\u00a0Bible\u2019s account of Balaam\u2019s talking donkey.\u00a0One is written by a\u00a0talented\u00a0man,\u00a0and the other comes from the very mouth of God.\u00a0Our children should be taught that the Bible is not simply another\u00a0book\u00a0of stories, but rather the one and only\u00a0Book written by\u00a0God and given to us that we might have a means of hearing His words today\u00a0(1 Thessalonians 2:13).\u00a0<\/span>
\nWe teach\u00a0our\u00a0children to sing\u00a0\u201cJesus Loves Me\u201d\u00a0when they are very young\u00a0and praise their efforts as they belt out the finale:\u201c\u2026the\u00a0Bible tells me so!\u201d\u00a0But, do our children\u00a0know\u00a0why<\/b>\u00a0they can believe what\u00a0they\u00a0read\u00a0in the Bible? They sing the words,\u00a0\u201cOh, the B-I-B-L-E, yes, that\u2019s the book for me! I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E!\u201d\u00a0But, do they know\u00a0why<\/b>\u00a0they can \u201cstand alone\u201d on the Bible?\u00a0We empower our children\u00a0when\u00a0we teach\u00a0them\u00a0the\u00a0scriptural and historical\u00a0facts that support the\u00a0Bible as God\u2019s\u00a0divinely inspired\u00a0Book.\u00a0Then, when\u00a0confronted with questions about the\u00a0Bible, they are confident and ready to answer!\u00a0<\/span>
\nKate and I had a great afternoon\u00a0running errands together.\u00a0While\u00a0we\u00a0were in the car,\u00a0we talked about\u00a0how\u00a0we speak to God through prayer and how God\u00a0speaks to us through His words\u00a0recorded\u00a0in\u00a0the Bible.\u00a0We talked about how God answers our prayers and the importance of thanking Him when He gives us what we ask.\u00a0We also\u00a0laughed, sang songs, bought groceries, and chewed a lot of gum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
