\nTwo summers ago,\u00a0while staying at the beach, I had\u00a0some time alone with my\u00a0grandmother.\u00a0She had come into the kitchen to talk to me as I stood ironing clothes for\u00a0the kids.\u00a0I don\u2019t recall every\u00a0detail of our conversation,\u00a0but I do remember that Granny talked about an inspiring letter she had received from a dear friend.\u00a0It was not uncommon for Granny to become emotional when speaking of her family, friends, and faith,\u00a0and since crying is one of the things I do best, together we were a regular tear-fest!\u00a0That afternoon we had a good cry while she taught me\u00a0something wonderful about God.\u00a0<\/span>
\nGran talked to me about David: a man after God\u2019s own heart but who struggled with sin and faced difficult trials.\u00a0She told me about a verse in the Bible that refers to God keeping David\u2019s tears in a bottle and how that thought has helped her many times to not feel forgotten in times of sadness.\u00a0At the moment, Gran could not pinpoint the chapter and verse,\u00a0and without\u00a0Google\u00a0we spent quite a bit of time flipping through our Bibles trying\u00a0to find the\u00a0Scripture.\u00a0One year\u00a0passed and while I hadn\u2019t forgotten my talk with Granny,\u00a0I had failed to look further into the precious\u00a0idea of God collecting tears.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nOne\u00a0morning I found it!\u00a0I was reading my Bible at\u00a0the kitchen table and came across\u00a0Psalm 56:8\u00a0which says, \u201cYou number my wanderings,\u00a0put my tears in Your bottle; are they not in Your book?\u201d\u00a0I wish that I could have called my\u00a0grandmother and told her that I remembered\u00a0our talk that afternoon and that I found the\u00a0Scripture she had told me about.\u00a0She\u00a0died shortly after that trip to the beach.\u00a0Granny\u00a0is now in a place where she will never\u00a0shed another tear, but\u00a0her\u00a0final gift\u00a0to me lives on as\u00a0a new perspective of peace in the\u00a0face of sorrow.\u00a0<\/span>
\nGod knew David.\u00a0He knew David\u2019s struggles, He saw what steered David off course;\u00a0He understood what brought David down.\u00a0God accounted for everything that David experienced in His book; nothing was unseen or forgotten.\u00a0God is not so removed from us that He doesn\u2019t know what makes us hurt!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe idea of putting tears in a bottle could be a reference to a lachrymatory, which was a vase used for catching the tears of mourners in Bible times.\u00a0It is a beautiful thought that God\u00a0collected David\u2019s tears and kept them in\u00a0H<\/b>is<\/b>\u00a0bottle.\u00a0He had in His remembrance those things that caused David grief.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nAs a child of God I can know with confidence that God catches my tears in His bottle too and records my afflictions and adversities in His book.\u00a0While He commands my respect and obedience, He also watches over me with tenderness, compassion, and concern in times of trouble and distress.\u00a0<\/span>
\nIf Granny were here,\u00a0I would thank her for telling me about David\u2019s tears.\u00a0I would thank her for the simple conversation we had at the beach that,\u00a0though at the time I didn\u2019t realize it, would so deeply strengthen my faith and my relationship with God.\u00a0She had a wonderful way of doing that.\u00a0<\/span>
