It wasn\u2019t much to look at, but he was proud of what he had and he liked working. He liked doing what he could to help support his mother and sisters. He was even saving some money so his sisters could go to college. A\u00a0good friend who had helped his family in the past\u00a0would come to him for food sometimes. He was even poorer than\u00a0Mohamed was, so Mohamed\u00a0would give\u00a0him the produce for free.\u00a0Friends have to look out for each other\u00a0to survive\u00a0in a place like this.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAfter a couple of\u00a0hours, trouble\u00a0showed\u00a0up\u2013\u2013the police.\u00a0He\u00a0asked them not to disturb his business, but\u00a0just like\u00a0always they\u00a0began their routine\u00a0bullying. They\u00a0confiscated\u00a0his produce cart,\u00a0hit him,\u00a0and yelled\u00a0out\u00a0slander\u00a0about his deceased father. They\u00a0also\u00a0confiscated\u00a0his weighing scales,\u00a0worth\u00a0about 100 U.S. dollars,\u00a0and he asked them to give it back. They didn\u2019t; instead the policewoman gave him a slap in the face. He went to the governor\u2019s building to ask him to hear his case so that he could get his scales back. They didn\u2019t listen to him; they wouldn\u2019t even open\u00a0the door. In desperation he cried out, \u201cIf you don\u2019t listen to me,\u00a0I will\u00a0burn myself!\u201d No reply. He got some gas in a jug and stood in the middle of the road right in front of the governor\u2019s building. He poured the fuel all over himself and shouted for the governor and all those around to hear: \u201cHow\u00a0do you expect me\u00a0to make a living?\u201d He lit the fuel and his body burned as a beacon for all\u00a0to see his protest against\u00a0the\u00a0injustice\u00a0and oppression\u00a0that he had experienced.\u00a0He died on January 4, 2011.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nFor years\u00a0Tunisia\u00a0had\u00a0suffered under the dictator\u00a0\u201cpresident\u201d\u00a0Zine\u00a0Ben Ali. Everything you did had\u00a0to be acceptable to him. If you stepped out of line or said the wrong thing, you were in trouble.\u00a0You had no freedom to speak anything politically except favorably toward Ben Ali\u00a0and his ruling party, the\u00a0Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD).\u00a0Locally, the police kept the\u00a0peace by censorship and abuse. There were cases of police abducting civilians and subjecting them to interrogation, prison,\u00a0and even torture, all without a trial.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nLike a dictator\u00a0denying his people their freedom, all men have\u00a0been\u00a0in bondage to the sinful nature\u00a0since Adam and Eve\u2019s disobedience.\u00a0About 1500\u00a0years\u00a0after their\u00a0first sin, the fallen state of man was\u00a0at a depraved state that\u00a0we today would\u00a0be shocked to see. Genesis 6:11,12\u00a0says:\u00a0\u201cThe earth was\u00a0also\u00a0corrupt\u00a0before God, and the earth was filled with violence.\u00a0So\u00a0God\u00a0looked upon\u00a0the earth, and\u00a0indeed, it was corrupt,\u00a0for all\u00a0flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.\u201d\u00a0Long afterwards,\u00a0the Jews were given a law by God through which they could learn how to be\u00a0pleasing to Him. But\u00a0as we see from the following Scriptures,\u00a0even this\u00a0law did not free them from sin.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nRomans 7:14-17:\u00a0\u201cFor we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.<b>\u202f<\/b>For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that\u00a0<i>it is<\/i>\u00a0good. But now,\u00a0<i>it is<\/i>\u00a0no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nIsaiah 59:9-10:\u00a0\u201cTherefore justice is far from us,\u00a0nor does\u00a0righteousness\u00a0overtake us; we\u00a0look\u00a0for light,\u00a0but there is\u00a0darkness!\u00a0For brightness, but we walk in\u00a0blackness.\u201d\u00a0So\u00a0on our own, we are lost and blind to the truth of our state.\u00a0Through the law that God gave to Israel, our eyes are opened to our sin; but we are still slaves to it.\u00a0So\u00a0to be freed from sin,\u00a0we need God, but not\u00a0just His\u00a0law. The Lord\u00a0saw it, and it displeased\u00a0Him that there was no justice. He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no\u00a0intercessor; therefore\u00a0His own arm brought salvation\u00a0for Him, and\u00a0His\u00a0own\u00a0righteousness, it sustained Him.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nJesus\u2019 sacrifice was the perfect application of divine\u00a0justice and mercy.\u00a0\u201cBut God,\u00a0who is\u00a0rich in mercy, because of\u00a0His\u00a0great love with which\u00a0He loved us,\u00a0even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ\u00a0(by grace you have been saved)\u201d\u00a0(Ephesians\u00a02:4-5).\u00a0When we obey the\u00a0Gospel of Christ, we\u2019re free, just like Romans\u00a08:2 says: \u201cFor the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus\u00a0has made me\u00a0free\u00a0from the law of sin and death.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nTry to soak in the\u00a0feeling for a\u00a0moment. You live in a country ruled by a corrupt and oppressive government. You have never known freedom. You have family that depends\u00a0on you for money so that they can sustain the food, shelter and clothing that they need to survive. Not what they\u00a0need to be happy, not\u00a0what they want; just enough to live. It\u2019s nearly impossible to\u00a0find work. You finally figure out a way to earn a little money. Then the police come. They\u2019re supposed to protect civilians from criminals. Instead they harass you,\u00a0slap you, hit you,\u00a0steal from you\u2013\u2013anything\u00a0they want to do.\u00a0You have never known life to be any better than this. Every day you try to earn a living, and the people who should be protecting you are the ones who cause you the most harm. The only way to make peace with them is to bribe them; but you can\u2019t afford how much they want from you.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThen it changes.\u00a0Mohamed\u00a0Bouazizi\u2019s\u00a0actions sparked protests in\u00a0Sidi\u00a0Bouzid.\u00a0The\u00a0entire\u00a0town goes to\u00a0the streets and protests\u00a0against the regime. You join them. On Facebook, you see videos and read conversations about people all over your country\u00a0rising up against Ben Ali, shouting to cleanse the corrupt government and law enforcement. Along with tens of thousands of people, you head to the capital city\u00a0of Tunis\u00a0where Ben Ali\u00a0reigns. Basically all business there\u00a0has stopped,\u00a0and everyone is screaming for the dictator to leave.\u00a0The pressure on the people\u00a0is put back on the tyrant where it came from. It\u2019s funny how all of you withstood the injustice for so long, and he only takes the pressure for\u00a0a little over\u00a0two weeks.\u00a0But, relief is\u00a0not without its own pain. Even though the citizens remained innocent of bloodshed, Ben Ali ordered his police to fire live rounds on his own people, and there were a number of beatings during the protest\u00a0at the capital.\u00a0Finally, on January 14<span data-fontsize=\"12\">,<\/span>\u00a02011,\u00a0Zine\u00a0Ben Ali\u00a0runs\u00a0away\u00a0into Saudi Arabia.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAnd just like that, he\u2019s gone. You\u2019re free. A weight lifts off your\u00a0heart and mind that had stifled the hope of happiness for so long; the floodgates open and joy rushes through your whole body. You celebrate with the rest of the country with smiles and laughter and dancing in the street. Have you ever seen\u00a0people that are so full of joy\u2013\u2013so ecstatic\u2013\u2013their emotions overflow and they just start dancing?\u00a0\u2026<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nFreedom from sin is like freedom from oppression. 2 Corinthians\u00a03:17 says,\u00a0\u201cWhere the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.\u201d Romans 6:7-8 says:\u00a0\u201cFor he who has died\u00a0has been\u00a0freed from sin.\u00a0Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we\u00a0shall\u00a0also live with\u00a0Him.\u201d We raise up against our old master the devil, and through the sacrifice of Jesus\u2019 life-blood,\u00a0our Lord frees us\u00a0from sin.\u00a0Then the\u00a0rightful King makes his entrance into\u00a0our hearts.\u00a0\u201cAnd the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, \u2018Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
