appear to have major\u00a0implications\u00a0in 2012 given the sad state of national economic affairs.\u00a0Yes,\u00a0the national debt is quadruple\u00a0what it was in\u00a01992.\u00a0Yes, unemployment is double compared to just 10 years ago.\u00a0Yes,\u00a0\u201ctaxmaggedon\u201d\u00a0might be right around the corner.\u00a0However, for all Americans, especially Christians, this\u00a0year&#8217;s\u00a0presidential election is about so much more.\u00a0The issue most distorted by political media,\u00a0ridiculed\u00a0by popular culture, and at times ignored by both\u00a0Republicans and\u00a0Democrats has really become an ugly wound in the body politic.\u00a0Its\u00a0\u201cbleeding&#8221;\u00a0affects all Americans,\u00a0and for Christians<b>,\u00a0<\/b>its cause is largely self-inflicted.\u00a0<b>Please read on!<\/b><span our government is pursuing policies more hostile to Christians than at any time in our country\u2019s history.\u00a0It is also not a coincidence that these irreligious policies coincide with the steady\u00a0retreat of Christians from civic\u00a0responsibility.\u00a0Christian voter turnout actually declined 40% between 1992-2004.\u00a0In 2000 only 15,000,000 out of 60,000,000 evangelical Christians voted.\u00a0In 2008 an estimated 24,000,000 or 40% of Christians were not even registered to vote.\u00a0In the Presidential election of that year, the outcome in Missouri was decided by 3,903 votes and in this state\u00a0over\u00a0102,000 Christians were not registered.\u00a0In North Carolina the eventual winner won by 14,177 votes\u2013\u2013281, 212 Christians were not registered.\u00a0<b>Incredibly, more Americans vote on\u00a0<\/b><b>\u201c<\/b><b>American Idol<\/b><b>\u201d<\/b><b>\u00a0than in\u00a0<\/b><b>presidential primaries<\/b><b>!<\/b><b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">1<\/span><\/b><span Christians have paid a high price for it since 2008<b>.\u00a0<\/b>Consider:<span data-font=\"PMingLiU\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\">In January 2009 the White House revoked conscience protections for pro-life health care workers who refuse to participate in\u00a0medical\u00a0activities\u00a0that violate\u00a0their religious beliefs.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">2<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"*\" data-font=\"PMingLiU\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Despite pleas from military chaplains,\u00a0the White House ended the\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell\u201d\u00a0policy in the\u00a0military\u00a0regarding\u00a0homosexuality, forcing chaplains to choose between their 1st\u00a0Amendment rights or losing chances for promotion.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">3<\/span><\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"*\" data-font=\"PMingLiU\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\">In May 2012 the White House announced it was opposing legislation to protect conscience rights of military chaplains who do not wish to perform same-sex marriages.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">4\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"*\" data-font=\"PMingLiU\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\">In February 2012 the White House forgave student loans in\u00a0exchange\u00a0for public service, but\u00a0announced\u00a0it\u00a0would\u00a0no longer forgive\u00a0student\u00a0loans if the public service was\u00a0related to religion.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">5<\/span><\/b><span data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\">In February 2011 the Administration urged passage of a non-discrimination law that does\u00a0<b>not<\/b>\u00a0contain hiring protections for\u00a0religious\u00a0groups, forcing religious organizations to\u00a0hire according to federal mandates, even if such mandates about\u00a0sexual\u00a0orientation\u00a0and &#8220;gender identity&#8221;\u00a0violate their religious beliefs.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">6<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\" data-leveltext=\"*\" data-font=\"PMingLiU\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"0\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><i>The Patient May Die<\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span>Yet, how often do you hear the news media\u00a0warn that government\u00a0policies such as these undermine religious freedom? A case in point is\u00a0the abortion-contraception mandates in the\u00a0Patient Protection and Affordable Care\u00a0Act\u00a0scheduled to take effect soon that require organizations, faith-based or not, to offer insurance coverage for abortion inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization regardless of the employer moral and religious objections.\u00a0Responding to widespread protest from religious organizations, President Obama eventually offered a narrow exemption to churches, but not\u00a0religiously-affiliated\u00a0hospitals, colleges, charities and other non-profits.\u00a0While\u00a0political media and\u00a0pro-abortion pundits\u00a0falsely\u00a0characterized the controversy as\u00a0a\u00a0&#8220;war&#8221;\u00a0on women and\u00a0sexual freedom, the White House is\u00a0establishing\u00a0the chilling precedent that churches are subordinate to the state, in that they can have\u00a0a certain range of beliefs as long as they keep them within the church walls rather than spread them through Christian-based hospitals, schools, or crisis pregnancy centers.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">7<\/span><\/b>\u00a0This thinly veiled attempt to keep moral and religious values out of public life puts religious freedom at crossroads in\u00a0America\u00a0as have Administration efforts to secularize hiring practices of churches and faith-based schools.\u00a0As one college president warned,\u00a0\u201cIf one presidential administration can override our religious purpose and use religious organizations to advance policies that undercut our values, then\u00a0surely another can&#8230;each time invoking some concept of the public will or public good, with the result these organizations become mere tools for the exercise of government power, morally subservient to the state&#8230;\u201d<span data-fontsize=\"12\">8<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b>In creating a &#8220;religious caste system&#8221; in which only those considered sufficiently\u00a0&#8220;religious&#8221; are granted exemptions, the proverbial &#8220;slippery slope&#8221; becomes a death trap for religious liberty.\u00a0Already, Ave Maria University, a Catholic college in Florida, has dropped student health care coverage, citing moral objections and increased premium costs.<span data-fontsize=\"12\">9<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i>The Road\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b><i>t<\/i><\/b><b><i>o Tyranny<\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nDespite pleas from military chaplains,\u00a0the White House ended the\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell\u201d\u00a0policy in the\u00a0military\u00a0regarding\u00a0homosexuality, forcing chaplains to choose between their 1st\u00a0Amendment rights or losing chances for promotion.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">3<\/span><\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span>In May 2012 the White House announced it was opposing legislation to protect conscience rights of military chaplains who do not wish to perform same-sex marriages.<b><span data-fontsize=\"12\">4<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>For all Americans, Christians or otherwise, when\u00a0religious\u00a0freedom is dismantled, it is a certainty that other liberties will be\u00a0next.\u00a0Romans 13:1-4 has\u00a0been called the most influential\u00a0Scripture\u00a0in all Western civilization, and most\u00a0definitely\u00a0to the infant United States.\u00a0Just as God established government as a servant of the people with the power to defend and protect them, Thomas Jefferson, author of the\u00a0Declaration\u00a0of Independence, wrote that\u00a0people\u00a0were not\u00a0created\u00a0by God to serve the\u00a0government.\u00a0Instead, the\u00a0government\u00a0was to serve man by\u00a0protecting\u00a0three God-given, and\u00a0therefore, unalienable rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.\u00a0Conversely, without God, the\u00a0highest\u00a0law-giver\u00a0rights are not\u00a0&#8220;unalienable,\u201d\u00a0but are based on whatever the\u00a0<b>government<\/b>\u00a0deems\u00a0legal.\u00a0In other words, if the secular state\u00a0becomes the highest moral authority, the government decides what values a church\u00a0can\u00a0have and\u00a0what principles a\u00a0Christian\u00a0can express in public.\u00a0Unalienable rights\u00a0are\u00a0no longer inseparable gifts from God, but are provided by the state\u00a0and\u00a0are, consequently,\u00a0temporal.\u00a0This is why the\u00a0authors\u00a0of this country&#8217;s freedom\u00a0documents, the &#8220;Founding Fathers,&#8221; wrote the religious clauses of the 1st Amendment to the Constitution, which prevent the federal government from establishing both a national denomination and prohibiting the free exercise of religious beliefs.\u00a0Ultimately, without a\u00a0Christian\u00a0vision of the human person, our political life is doomed to\u00a0become\u00a0the mere\u00a0exercise\u00a0of power\u00a0subject to the whim of a monarch, dictator,\u00a0or president.<span data-fontsize=\"12\">10<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i>Obscurity Is Not\u00a0<\/i><\/b><b><i>a<\/i><\/b><b><i>n Option<\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nChristians need to rediscover the Christian roots of American freedom, re-engage in\u00a0civil\u00a0stewardship from a Biblical perspective, and, like the\u00a0apostle Paul, be bold in\u00a0asserting\u00a0their constitutional rights.\u00a0Thousands of Americans already are.\u00a0Just\u00a0as Paul insisted on his constitutional rights as a\u00a0Roman\u00a0citizen against a legal establishment steeped in paganism, the growth of faith-based legal organizations like the Alliance Defense Fund, the American Center for Law and Justice, and the Rutherford Institute\u00a0are defending\u00a0the\u00a0religious liberties of those threatened by the anti-Christian bias clearly evident in our government and society.\u00a0Their many church\/state victories in the last fifteen years have inspired legislative ones too.\u00a0In 2007, Texas became the first state to adopt the School Children\u2019s Religious Liberties Act to give equal protection, freedom,\u00a0and opportunity to students of faith attending public schools, including free discussion of religious beliefs and the use of religious texts in assignments.\u00a0In May 2012 Arizona became the 6th state to allow high schools to offer a Bible-related course.\u00a0Of course, grass roots victories such as these can and will be reversed\u00a0if the majority of Christians continue to retreat from civic and moral\u00a0responsibility.\u00a0To be sure,\u00a0<b>Christians cannot change a culture for Christ by just using worldly means such as politics<\/b><b>.\u00a0<\/b><b>Real cultural change comes from the inside.<\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nBut it is also true that American political and social institutions once\u00a0<b>respected<\/b>\u00a0and even\u00a0<b>reflected<\/b>\u00a0Christian values because Christians lived and voted in such a way that shaped those institutions.\u00a0They also understood the Biblical basis of American constitutional law and, like the\u00a0apostle Paul, were quick to defend their constitutional rights.\u00a0To do otherwise, to abandon civil stewardship and ignore Christ\u2019s\u00a0admonition\u00a0to be\u00a0\u201csalt and light\u201d\u00a0in society is to\u00a0ignore God&#8217;s warning that &#8220;when the righteous rule the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule the people mourn&#8221;\u00a0(Proverbs 29:2).\u00a0Obviously, the righteous cannot rule unless Christians help to elect them, and without Christian values in government we subject ourselves to devious, immoral leaders who will bring hardships on &#8220;we the people.&#8221;
