\nI\u2019m not sure how the process of making memories works. There are moments in\u00a0my\u00a0life that\u00a0I\u00a0think\u00a0I\u00a0will never forget, and then\u00a0I\u00a0look back on a picture and\u00a0sometimes even\u00a0wonder when or where that picture was taken.\u00a0And then there are other moments, seemingly insignificant, unplanned, fleeting,\u00a0that impress upon our memories the sounds, the smells, the\u00a0sights, and even the feelings of that exact moment, and these are remembered without photograph or video or great lyrical ballads of any kind. I don\u2019t know how to tell which moments will be carried for a lifetime and which memories will\u00a0be lost somewhere in a string of days gone by.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nAnd suddenly this is important to me. It is important to me because I have a son who is forming his earliest memories. His childhood is happening now, and I have no way of knowing which moments that we spend together, or apart, are making their way into that part of his memory that will be lasting, clear, and meaningful. I hope it\u2019s the trip to the zoo with his cousins when\u00a0trees were blooming on the\u00a0most beautiful day in February, and they tried to catch a peacock. Or\u00a0I would like for it be\u00a0of nights when\u00a0we pick out a book to read and say prayers before hugs,\u00a0before kisses,\u00a0before wishes of sweet dreams. Maybe he will remember asking me \u201cMom, why did God send us insects\/rainbows\/Jesus\/mice\/cats\/trees\/tornados\/footballs?\u201d and my thoughtful, gentle, patient and wise\u00a0answer. Well,\u00a0actually I\u2019m\u00a0pretty sure he won\u2019t\u00a0remember a thoughtful and wise\u00a0answer since my answers are more\u00a0of a\u00a0stumbling around\u00a0searching for\u00a0truthful words to try to explain things\u00a0to a four-year old\u00a0that sometimes I don\u2019t even understand myself.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nBut\u00a0then there are moments that I don\u2019t want him to remember.\u00a0Moments when I\u00a0answer him sharply\u00a0because I have lost my keys again\u00a0or I can\u2019t get the printer to work correctly\u00a0and am out of patience. Or that\u00a0occasion that\u00a0I sent him out of the kitchen because I didn\u2019t have time to let him help make the cookies for the fellowship meal. Or\u00a0the conversations I had in which\u00a0I spoke ill of a friend or family member instead of keeping something to myself that never should have been shared in the first place. When I think of how often he sees me at my weakest\u00a0moments, I hope\u00a0those are not the moments that make it into his memories, moments that he remembers how he felt when his mother was too busy for him or too worried about things that I don\u2019t even remember now.\u00a0<\/span>
\nAnd\u00a0it\u2019s very likely that\u00a0the moments that make it\u00a0into his memories won\u2019t\u00a0be the ones that I would choose.\u00a0He may never remember his birthday party\u00a0and the time I spent\u00a0trying to coordinate invitations, decorations,\u00a0games, food, and cake,\u00a0and the cool toy that I was so excited to wrap in superhero wrapping paper that is now lost in a toy box somewhere. Truthfully, he is more likely to remember\u00a0painting a cardboard shield together\u00a0and listening to his dad talk about the many uses of duct tape as\u00a0they made the shield\u2019s handle.\u00a0He probably won\u2019t remember the huge Easter dinner I cooked and the fancy dishes I used to set the table, but he might remember sitting on the front porch on a summer morning\u00a0eating sticky cool\u00a0watermelon together and smelling\u00a0honeysuckle.\u00a0He might not remember the flip chart with the colorful pictures I made to teach him the story of Gideon fighting a battle with 300 men, but he just might remember being comforted when\u00a0I\u00a0used simple words to tell him about a time that Jesus\u2019 disciples were\u00a0on a boat and\u00a0scared of a storm\u00a0while he\u00a0is sitting in my lap during a thunderstorm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
\nI don\u2019t know how the process of making memories works, but I do know that most of\u00a0my clearest\u00a0memories were made in moments of everyday life. Beautiful moments, sad moments, hurt moments\u2026.ones\u00a0that no one tried to create, that no one had a camera for, that no one else may even realize happened.\u00a0It is my desire that I can help\u00a0my son,\u00a0\u201cRemember now your Creator in the days of your youth,\u00a0before the difficult days come\u201d (Ecclesiastes 12:1). I can\u2019t control the memories he will make, but I can try to give him a lifetime devoted to remembering the Creator, so that whichever memories he keeps, they will be ones to help Him through the difficult days that will come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
