{"id":5364,"date":"2017-12-01T17:39:12","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T23:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tampaseo.expert\/focus\/?p=5364"},"modified":"2017-12-01T17:39:12","modified_gmt":"2017-12-01T23:39:12","slug":"3rd-generation-curse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tampaseo.expert\/focus\/2017\/12\/01\/3rd-generation-curse\/","title":{"rendered":"3rd Generation Curse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Brett Pharr<\/strong><br \/>\nThroughout my banking career,\u00a0I have had many opportunities to work with small and medium-sized\u00a0enterprises that were family owned.\u00a0After surviving the initial few years of operation, a common cause of failure for family businesses is generational transfer.\u00a0This is especially true for the third generation, where by some estimates the success rate is as little as ten percent.\u00a0Passing down the family business is a high-risk prospect.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nSimilarly, passing on our faith to the next generation is not a given.\u00a0Being reared in a Christian home is an enormous advantage.\u00a0But it is sometimes said that the first generation believes the\u00a0Gospel, the second assumes it, and the third loses it.\u00a0To provide emphasis to the criticality of the point,\u00a0we declare,\u00a0\u201cWe are only one generation away from apostasy.\u201d\u00a0It is a serious challenge that requires great diligence.\u00a0What can we do?<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nMake a plan.\u00a0In the family-owned business,\u00a0the advisors will counsel\u00a0that you can\u2019t start too early to plan the succession.\u00a0As a parent, grandparent,\u00a0or elder, we must also plan generational succession with an end goal in mind.\u00a0Too often we live in the day to day because of its pressures, and do not set a vision for our young people.\u00a0Where do we want the next generation to be in ten or twenty years? What are they facing today that will shape them? How do we best influence them? Tools including Bible education, service and fellowship opportunities,\u00a0and emphasizing the importance of Christian\u00a0universities can all help.\u00a0A thoughtful path forward that is carried out and amended as needed will go a long way in making sure the next generation is equipped for the faith.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nOften in\u00a0life, we don\u2019t know what we don\u2019t know.\u00a0This is especially true of those that have not lived through various experiences.\u00a0And so, our obvious role is to transfer knowledge.\u00a0The foundation is Biblical knowledge; we all do well to remember the admonition of Moses in Deuteronomy\u00a06: 7.\u00a0Concerning the statutes of the Lord he said, \u201cYou shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.\u201d In discussions with young people who are losing faith, I am amazed at how little\u00a0they know.\u00a0Sometimes it is Biblical ignorance.\u00a0Other times it is a lack of historical understanding on key questions.\u00a0Frequently young adults reject core principles without\u00a0a basic knowledge of past\u00a0debates and discussions.\u00a0I exhort them to make their own decision, but be sure to do it with an understanding of the topic.\u00a0The founder of a business fought through many difficult days and questions that are lost on the third generation.\u00a0In the same way we should provide a historic understanding of the spiritual struggles that have gone before to those that did not have occasion to live them.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:100,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559737&quot;:820,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nCulture and heritage are powerful forces.\u00a0In the business example, knowing your brand and being true to it goes a long way to maintaining focus, distinctiveness,\u00a0and longevity.\u00a0Mission and vision statements create cohesiveness and singular purpose for an enterprise.\u00a0When it comes to faith, reasoned knowledge is its foundation.\u00a0But in every life comes a time when we are just not thinking clearly.\u00a0This may be especially true as children move into adulthood.\u00a0It is at that time that an internal sense of identification with the body of Christ is so critical.\u00a0Some in a time of weakness may erroneously change their minds.\u00a0It is a lot harder to flippantly change your core identity.\u00a0(This is why the\u00a0Biblical model of withdrawing should be so effective.) As we think about the transfer of faith, creating within each generation a core allegiance to our heritage and history will create retention.\u00a0To do this we must make\u00a0a unique plea\u00a0future generations\u00a0as to why they should adopt our spiritual culture\u00a0(based on demonstrative truth)\u00a0and their role within it.\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:100,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559737&quot;:820,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAnd we must help each generation make faith\u00a0its\u00a0own.\u00a0In Genesis 28 we read of Jacob\u2019s coming of age spiritually while in a foreign land and facing unique challenges.\u00a0He certainly had a tremendous advantage and heritage in his grandfather Abraham and his father Isaac. Nevertheless, as he received the promises of God, he had to make his own choice, which he did through his vow (Genesis\u00a028:20-22).\u00a0Relying on an ancestor\u2019s faith doesn\u2019t work and may fail when under pressure.\u00a0Helping young people make faith their own includes addressing the unique circumstances they face, answering their \u201cwhy questions\u201d with real and respectful answers, while modeling the way forward.
