\nIn a recent Wall Street Journal article (Sat, Apr 28, 2012), author Charles\u00a0Wheelan\u00a0wrote about\u00a0“10 Things Your Commencement Speaker Won’t Tell\u00a0You.”\u00a0These are adapted from\u00a0a book,\u00a0“10\u00bd Things No Commencement Speaker Has\u00a0Ever Said,” by Charles\u00a0Wheelan,\u00a0to be\u00a0published May 7th<\/span>\u00a0by W.W. Norton & Co.\u00a0Now,\u00a0it’s not so much that I am recommending the book or the article\u00a0because it\u00a0takes a lot of weeding to get to the true gems found throughout. Nevertheless, at least one\u00a0glaring point caught my eye (I may write about the other nine items later):\u00a0Your parents don’t want what is best for you.<\/b>\u00a0 Strange indeed! But I think Mr.\u00a0Wheelan\u00a0may be right in more ways that he intended.\u00a0<\/span>
\nYour parents don’t want what is best for you.\u00a0<\/i><\/b>They want what is good for you, which isn’t always the same thing. There is a natural instinct to protect our children from risk and discomfort, and therefore to urge safe choices.\u00a0<\/i>Theodore Roosevelt\u2014soldier, explorer, president\u2014once remarked, “It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.” Great quote, but I am willing to bet that Teddy’s mother wanted him to be a doctor or a lawyer.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>
\nBiblical love is\u00a0a self-sacrificing, caring commitment that shows itself in seeking the highest good of, or the best for, the one loved.<\/i>\u00a0At its heart, biblical love is a commitment, and thus it may be commanded\u00a0(Jho. 14:15). But it is not a commitment without feeling, but a caring commitment\u00a0(Eph. 5:25). In other words, biblical love involves both delight and duty. Also, this caring commitment is not just an attitude,\u00a0but\u00a0an action: it shows itself in deeds\u00a0(1\u00a0Jho. 3:18). Those deeds often require a supreme self-sacrifice, as seen in Jesus going to the cross\u00a0(Jho. 3:16; 1\u00a0Jho. 3:16; 4:8-9). The goal of this commitment is the highest good of the one loved\u00a0(2 Cor. 5:14-15), which is that the person be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ\u00a0(Rom. 8:29; 12:1-2). Thus biblical love allows for loving correction when needed\u00a0(Heb. 12:6; Pro. 13:24).\u00a0-Modified from Stephen J. Cole<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>
\nParents,\u00a0grandparents,\u00a0love\u00a0your\u00a0children enough to seek their\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest and not just what is\u00a0good<\/i>\u00a0for them.\u00a0It may be\u00a0good<\/i>\u00a0for them not to go through any pain or discomfort but is that really in their\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest? No pain – No gain is more than just a sports’\u00a0motto,\u00a0it is life’s most demanding principle (Heb. 12:11; Jas. 1:2-4; 2 Cor. 4:17). The Book says,\u00a0“without shedding of blood is no remission”<\/i>\u00a0(Heb. 9:22) and\u00a0“we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”<\/i>\u00a0(Heb. 10:10) and\u00a0“[<\/i>y]e<\/i>\u00a0have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin”<\/i>\u00a0(Heb. 12:4).\u00a0Children may not always appreciate\u00a0or see the\u00a0good<\/i>\u00a0in\u00a0the long\u00a0grueling\u00a0hours of reading\u00a0and studying the Bible in the home but it is in their\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest (2 Tim. 2:15;\u00a0Acts 17:11). Children may not always see the\u00a0good<\/i>\u00a0in faithfully attending the weekly Bible studies at church but it is in their\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest (Heb. 10:24-26; cf. Neh. 8:1-9).\u00a0<\/span>
\nParents, grandparents, love your children enough to seek their\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest\u00a0by setting a good example before them\u00a0in this area\u00a0(1 Tim. 4:12-13). It may not always be\u00a0easy<\/i>\u00a0(i.e.,\u00a0good<\/i>) to set down to read and study the Bible every day but it is in the\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest of your children and grandchildren that you do (Jos. 24:15; Jud. 2:10-15). It may not always be\u00a0easy<\/i>\u00a0to set down to read and study the Bible with your children every day but it is in the\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest of your children and grandchildren\u00a0to do just that\u00a0(Deu. 6:6-15).\u00a0<\/span>
\n“The average American Bible class\u00a0runs\u00a024% under the attendance of the average church service.”\u00a0\u00a0Here in Lindsay we exceed that number\u00a0– not a good thing!\u00a0On average this past year we have run about 34% under the attendance of the average worship service.\u00a0Listen, I realize that it isn’t always about\u00a0the\u00a0numbers.\u00a0Nevertheless, if 50% of the teaching arm of the church\u00a0is\u00a0done in our Bible classes, and I believe that would be a fair estimate, then 34% of the church is losing out on 50% of the teaching. This cannot spell SUCCESS for the unity, affection and work of the church.\u00a0Let us commit ourselves to greater personal and collective Bible study.\u00a0Let us\u00a0push the number of students attending Bible classes up and the 34% number down, down, down!\u00a0And, one of the few times that you will hear me\u00a0say\u00a0this: let us\u00a0be less than average in our attendance between our Bible classes and our worship!\u00a0<\/span>
\nMay God help your parents want what is\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0for you even when you can’t see the\u00a0good<\/i>\u00a0in\u00a0it.\u00a0May we always seek our\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest even when it’s not\u00a0good<\/i>\u00a0for\u00a0us.\u00a0Getting involved in the local congregation is always in your\u00a0best<\/i>\u00a0interest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
