\nHaving looked into the tearful eyes of parents whose children have abandoned the Faith, I have learned there are a million miles between our children \u201cgoing through the motions\u201d in reference to their spiritual lives versus our children possessing hearts that dictate their actions. In this column, I plan to share with you what I hope to instill in the hearts of my own children and those whom I love.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>
\nWalk through any cemetery and glance at the dates that surround you.\u00a0Many\u00a0tombstones speak of an individual who lived before computers, cars, or indoor plumbing existed. In my hometown of Franklin, Tennessee,\u00a0we have a cemetery in which many soldiers from the Civil War are buried. Many of these soldiers have been dead for close to 150 years. Consider for a moment that aside from these pieces of granite or marble,\u00a0there are relatively few \u201cmaterial\u201d possessions\u00a0from these soldiers\u00a0still in existence. So what did these men of previous generations leave behind? Simply put, every single one of them left behind some type of legacy.\u00a0<\/span>
\nAmericans spend an enormous amount of time amassing\u00a0\u201cmaterial\u201d\u00a0things\u2014so we certainly don\u2019t like to think about the very real fact that one day,\u00a0all of it will be gone. Our cars will rust and probably be recycled into future material. Our homes will decay and one day be replaced. Our stocks, clothes, and electronics will be things of the past. The only thing that will be passed into the future will be our legacy. While we draft up wills in consideration of where our earthly possessions will go, we don\u2019t give much thought about passing along\u00a0a living\u00a0legacy.\u00a0<\/span>
\nHere\u2019s what I intend to teach my children on the<\/b>ir legacy<\/b>.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen I die,\u00a0each one of you will receive some of my physical possessions. While I hope those goods\u00a0help you in your future walks of life, my prayer is that\u00a0you will treasure\u00a0the spiritual training that your mom and I\u00a0passed on even more than the material things. I have shared with each of you that my greatest desire is to see you in\u00a0Heaven\u2014for you to marry strong Christians\u00a0and rear\u00a0future generations of Christians. For you see, this will be my legacy.\u00a0This is what I will be passing down to generations I will never live to see.\u00a0<\/span>
\nConsider how it would feel if you knew someone back in 1912 was working diligently to make sure you remained\u00a0faithful to God.\u00a0That is a unique feeling\u00a0and one you may struggle to truly grasp.\u00a0My prayer is that you will look into the future and consider what you can do to ensure future generations of\u00a0Harrubs\u00a0will be faithful.\u00a0The reality is in 100 years people will not care what your career was\u2014and more than likely you will be forgotten. But your grandchildren and great-grandchildren will\u00a0still\u00a0be affecting the world.\u00a0Start thinking now about what your legacy will be. Maybe for you it will be 100 years of no unfaithfulness to God in your lineage. Or maybe\u00a0your legacy will be\u00a0100 years without divorce or alcoholic beverages. The point is you need to consider what your legacy will be, and then start working diligently, with passion and perseverance,\u00a0toward that goal\u00a0(Proverbs 16:3).\u00a0<\/span>
\nOne of the greatest blessings in the Bible was given to a family that held to a family legacy of no alcoholic beverages. In Jeremiah 35 we learn about the\u00a0Rechabites. The\u00a0Rechabites\u00a0were the descendants of\u00a0Rechab\u00a0through\u00a0Jonadab\u00a0(or\u00a0Jehonadab). This special family belonged to the\u00a0Kenites\u00a0who accompanied the children of Israel into the Promised Land and dwelt among them. We know for instance Moses married a\u00a0Kenite\u00a0wife (Judges 1:16).\u00a0<\/span>
\nIn Jeremiah 35 the descendants of\u00a0Jonadab\u00a0are offered wine. We find their response in verse 6: \u201cBut they said,\u00a0\u2018We\u00a0will drink no wine, for\u00a0Jonadab\u00a0the son of\u00a0Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying,\u00a0\u201cYou shall drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever.\u2019\u201d Because of their obedience, this family receives one of the strongest blessings in the Bible.\u00a0<\/span>
\nAnd Jeremiah said to the house of the\u00a0Rechabites, \u201cThus says the Lord\u00a0of hosts, the God of Israel: \u2018Because you have obeyed the commandment of\u00a0Jonadab\u00a0your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded you,\u2019\u00a0therefore thus says the Lord\u00a0of hosts, the God of Israel:\u00a0\u2018<\/b>Jonadab<\/b>\u00a0the son of\u00a0<\/b>Rechab<\/b>\u00a0shall not lack a man to stand before Me forever<\/b>\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/b>(Jeremiah 35:18-19, emp. added).\u00a0<\/span>
\nMy children,\u00a0this is a legacy! This\u00a0blessing is\u00a0worth far more than any material possession I can pass\u00a0along to you.\u00a0The reality is we will all leave behind a legacy. I pray that your legacy will be seen through future generations of faithful Christians.\u00a0Always remember Judges 2:10, \u201cWhen all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.\u201d\u00a0Hopefully your children will grow to be future elders, preachers, and\u00a0Christian\u00a0homemakers. Consider the words of the inspired psalmist: \u201cThe words of the Lord\u00a0are\u00a0pure words,\u00a0like\u00a0silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever\u201d\u00a0(Psalm 12:6-7).\u00a0Now if we can just figure out who gets my collection of ball caps when I\u2019m gone.\u00a0<\/span>
