{"id":2001,"date":"2016-04-07T03:20:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-07T08:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/focuspressblog.com\/?p=2001"},"modified":"2016-04-07T03:20:16","modified_gmt":"2016-04-07T08:20:16","slug":"leave-legacy-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tampaseo.expert\/focus\/2016\/04\/07\/leave-legacy-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Leaving a Legacy of Faithfulness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Walk through any cemetery and glance at the dates that surround you.\u00a0Many tombstones speak of an individual who lived before computers, cars,\u00a0or indoor plumbing existed. In my hometown of Franklin, Tennessee, we have\u00a0a cemetery in which many soldiers from the Civil War are buried. Many of\u00a0these soldiers have been dead for close to 150 years. Consider for a\u00a0moment that aside from these pieces of granite or marble, there are\u00a0relatively few \u201cmaterial\u201d possessions from these soldiers still in existence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So what did these men of previous generations leave behind? Simply put,\u00a0every single one of them left behind some type of legacy.\u00a0Americans spend an enormous amount of time amassing \u201cmaterial\u201d\u00a0things\u2014so we certainly don\u2019t like to think about the very real fact that one\u00a0day, all of it will be gone. Our cars will rust and probably be recycled into\u00a0future material. Our homes will decay and one day be replaced. Our stocks,\u00a0clothes, and electronics will be things of the past. The only thing that will\u00a0be passed into the future will be our legacy. While we draft up wills in consideration\u00a0of where our earthly possessions will go,\u00a0we don\u2019t give much thought about passing along\u00a0a living legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Here\u2019s what I intend to teach my children\u00a0on their legacy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When I die, each one of you will receive some\u00a0of my physical possessions. While I hope those\u00a0goods help you in your future walks of life, my prayer\u00a0is that you will treasure the spiritual training that\u00a0your mom and I passed on even more than the material\u00a0things. I have shared with each of you that\u00a0my greatest desire is to see you in Heaven\u2014for you\u00a0to marry strong Christians and rear future generations\u00a0of Christians. For you see, this will be my legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is what I will be passing down to generations\u00a0I will never live to see.\u00a0Consider how it would feel if you knew someone\u00a0back in 1912 was working diligently to make\u00a0sure you remained faithful to God. That is a unique\u00a0feeling and one you may struggle to\u00a0truly grasp. My prayer is that you will look into the\u00a0future and consider what you can do to ensure future\u00a0generations of Harrubs will be faithful. The reality\u00a0is in 100 years people will not care what your career was\u2014and more\u00a0than likely you will be forgotten. But your grandchildren and great-grandchildren\u00a0will still be affecting the world. Start thinking now about what your\u00a0legacy will be. Maybe for you it will be 100 years of no unfaithfulness to\u00a0God in your lineage. Or maybe your legacy will be 100 years without divorce\u00a0or alcoholic beverages. The point is you need to consider what your legacy\u00a0will be, and then start working diligently, with passion and perseverance,\u00a0toward that goal (Proverbs 16:3).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of the greatest blessings in the Bible was given to a family that held\u00a0to a family legacy of no alcoholic beverages. In Jeremiah 35 we learn about\u00a0the Rechabites. The Rechabites were the descendants of Rechab through\u00a0Jonadab (or Jehonadab). This special family belonged to the Kenites who\u00a0accompanied the children of Israel into the Promised Land and dwelt among\u00a0them. We know for instance Moses married a Kenite wife (Judges 1:16).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In Jeremiah 35 the descendants of Jonadab are offered wine. We find\u00a0their response in verse 6: \u201cBut they said, \u2018We will drink no wine, for\u00a0Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, \u201cYou shall\u00a0drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever.\u2019\u201d Because of their obedience, this\u00a0family receives one of the strongest blessings in the Bible.\u00a0And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, \u201cThus says the Lord\u00a0of hosts, the God of Israel: \u2018Because you have obeyed the commandment\u00a0of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all\u00a0that he commanded you,\u2019 therefore thus says the Lord\u00a0of hosts, the God of Israel: \u2018Jonadab the son of\u00a0Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Me\u00a0forever\u2019 \u201d (Jeremiah 35:18-19, emp. added).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">My children, this is a legacy! This blessing is\u00a0worth far more than any material possession I can\u00a0pass along to you. The reality is we will all leave\u00a0behind a legacy. I pray that your legacy will be seen\u00a0through future generations of faithful Christians.\u00a0Always remember Judges 2:10, \u201cWhen all that\u00a0generation had been gathered to their fathers,\u00a0another generation arose after them who did not\u00a0know the Lord nor the work which He had done for\u00a0Israel.\u201d Hopefully your children will grow to be future\u00a0elders, preachers, and Christian homemakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Consider the words of the inspired psalmist: \u201cThe\u00a0words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in\u00a0a furnace of earth, purified seven times. You shall\u00a0keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this\u00a0generation forever\u201d (Psalm 12:6-7).
