It\u2019s one of the\u00a0unquestionable indicators that\u00a0some of us need to step back and\u00a0assess, in light of God\u2019s Word, what\u00a0entertains us. We live in a time in\u00a0which it is so easy to let the ways of a\u00a0depraved world become our ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Little\u00a0by little, some Christians are becoming\u00a0accustomed to the presence of sinful\u00a0behavior around them, and in their\u00a0increasingly desensitized state, some\u00a0have even started to like it. By that, I don\u2019t\u00a0necessarily mean that these Christians\u00a0are taking part in many of the world\u2019s sins.\u00a0Rather, they are finding enjoyment in seeing\u00a0or hearing of the sins of others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example, do you enjoy television\u00a0programs and movies that glorify sin? Do\u00a0you enjoy the risqu\u00e9 story? Do you laugh\u00a0at the \u201ccolorful\u201d language of the world?\u00a0While visiting in the home of a fine\u00a0Christian couple recently, my wife and I\u00a0saw a simple sign perched atop their\u00a0television set. It read\u00a0<strong>\u201cHow dare we be\u00a0entertained by the\u00a0things that sent\u00a0Jesus to the cross!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That sobering thought reminds me of\u00a0Genesis 9:20-27, where we read of Noah\u2019s\u00a0drunkenness and its devastating results.\u00a0Though a good man on the whole\u00a0(Genesis 6:8), Noah was not perfect. The\u00a0Bible tells of his getting drunk and becoming\u00a0\u201cuncovered in his tent.\u201d While the\u00a0drunken Noah was lying naked on his\u00a0bed, his son Ham \u201csaw the nakedness of\u00a0his father, and told his two brothers outside\u201d\u00a0(9:22). According to a number of\u00a0sources[<span class=\"s1\">1]<\/span>, the word &#8220;saw&#8221; in that passage\u00a0can include the idea of enjoyment or satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The word told could be translated\u00a0\u201ctold with delight.\u201d[<span class=\"s1\">2]\u00a0<\/span>The sense is not\u00a0so much that Ham found some lewd gratification\u00a0in his father\u2019s nakedness, but\u00a0that he simply thought that the whole\u00a0situation was funny. Shem and Japheth,\u00a0thankfully, did not share their brother\u2019s\u00a0sense of humor. It was no laughing\u00a0matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is simply not proper to find enjoyment\u00a0or pleasure in sin, be it our own or someone\u00a0else\u2019s. Love \u201cdoes not rejoice at\u00a0wrongdoing\u201d (1 Corinthians 13:6 ESV).\u00a0Only \u201cfools mock at sin\u201d (Proverbs 14:9).\u00a0When Jesus saw sinful behavior, He\u00a0responded with emotions like anger\u00a0(Mark 3:5) and tearful sorrow (Luke\u00a019:41). In light of these passages, can you\u00a0honestly picture the Lord having a chuckle\u00a0at adultery, lying, obscene language,\u00a0witchcraft, jealousy, drunkenness, and\u00a0the like (Galatians 5:19-21; Colossians 3:5-\u00a010; Ephesians 5:3-4)? Neither can I.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What does it say, then, to know of so\u00a0many professed Christians who derive\u00a0great pleasure and enjoyment from television\u00a0programs that glorify sin? (<em>&#8220;Game of Thrones,&#8221; &#8220;The Walking Dead,&#8221; and &#8220;Breaking Bad&#8221; come to mind as recent examples of wildly popular shows that are notoriously filled with sexual content, gratuitous violence, and\/or foul language.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Carefully consider Paul\u2019s admonition to\u00a0the Church in Ephesus, \u201cBut sexual\u00a0immorality and all impurity or covetousness\u00a0must not even be named among\u00a0you, as is proper among saints. Let there\u00a0be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude\u00a0joking, which are out of place, but instead\u00a0let there be thanksgiving\u201d (Ephesians 5:3-\u00a04 ESV). Verse 3 in the NIV reads, in part,\u00a0\u201c\u2026 among you there must not be even a\u00a0hint of sexual immorality \u2026 .\u201d How can\u00a0we keep \u201ceven a hint of sexual immorality\u201d\u00a0out of our lives and \u201ctake every\u00a0thought captive to obey Christ\u201d (2\u00a0Corinthians 10:5), while being entertained\u00a0by some of the very sins that sent Jesus\u00a0to Calvary?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">May we all examine ourselves\u00a0(Lamentations 3:40; 2 Corinthians 13:5)\u00a0and adopt the attitude of the psalmist,\u00a0\u201cThrough your precepts I get understanding;\u00a0therefore I hate every false\u00a0way\u201d (Psalms 119:104).
