Sometimes young couples express uncertainty about bringing children into such an evil world.\u00a0When we consider the flood of immoral entertainment, websites, and messages stalking our youth\u00a0today, it is no wonder that parents have doubts and fears about rearing children in our society. So\u00a0how do we raise G-rated kids in an X-rated world?<\/p>\n

Practice Prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n

When it comes to evil, the Bible gives us this instruction:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Avoid it! (1 Thessalonians 5:19)<\/p>\n

\u2022 Flee from it! (1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22)<\/p>\n

\u2022 Hate it! (Romans 12:9)<\/p>\n

What is the best way to avoid immoral habits? Don\u2019t allow those habits to ever get started. What\u00a0is the best way to keep a child\u2019s heart pure? Shield him from as much of the world\u2019s filth as possible.\u00a0If we think our children will benefit from exposure to the \u201creal world\u201d of evil, we must remember\u00a0that our children will be exposed to plenty of evil messages and influences despite our best efforts.\u00a0Why open a child\u2019s life unnecessarily to further opportunities for evil habits and addictions?<\/p>\n

Prevention Suggestions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Monitor the television. Do not make it the usual practice in the home for the television to be\u00a0left on; make it the usual practice for the television to be turned off. Be very selective about\u00a0what programs are watched because frankly there is not much worth watching. Parents are\u00a0wise to select DVDs and television options that are preapproved.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Think carefully about placement and time allowance for computers and\u00a0televisions in the home. It is a good practice to have the television and\u00a0computer in the common family rooms where programs and websites can be\u00a0monitored. Of course this is very challenging now that we have access to the\u00a0Internet on devices that fit in our pockets and go with us everywhere. Families\u00a0may need to set certain times to \u201cunplug\u201d or \u201cturn in\u201d electronic devices.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Have defined standards for children when it comes to movie watching. Some\u00a0families make it simple and say nothing can be viewed below a certain\u00a0rating. The problem is that ratings are often deceptive, so parents have to do\u00a0more investigating through movie review websites that give detailed\u00a0information about sexual content, violence, and bad language.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Utilize \u201cfamily filters\u201d on computers, but don\u2019t rely on these filters alone to\u00a0guide the family\u2019s Internet usage. If we allow our children to use social media networks on\u00a0the Internet, we must train them about the dangers and check to make sure they are responsible\u00a0in their use.<\/p>\n

\u2022 If our children have cell phones, we should set limits and monitor our children\u2019s cellphone\u00a0use. Privileges should be earned by mature use. Be very cautious about turning children loose\u00a0with smart phones. A young person should prove to be trustworthy and self-disciplined to earn\u00a0this privilege.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Screen carefully for violence and evil messages the video games children play. Do not allow\u00a0children to waste too much time with these games. It is better to allow games as a reward\u00a0after chores and schoolwork are completed.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Guide children in the type of music they hear. Children can be gradually influenced by catchy\u00a0tunes with immoral lyrics.<\/p>\n

Prepare the Heart<\/strong><\/p>\n

Preventive measures alone are not enough. Man-made filters are helpful but are not foolproof\u00a0and should not take the place of a good conscience. A strong conscience is built on a knowledge\u00a0of God\u2019s Word which makes us wise for salvation, trains us in righteousness, and thoroughly equips\u00a0us (2 Timothy 3:15-17).\u00a0This step of preparation is essential because we cannot intercept every temptation that will be\u00a0introduced into our children\u2019s lives. What will protect our children when we are not present? A heart\u00a0trained to treasure God\u2019s approval, a heart that is sensitive to the deceptive messages of Satan.<\/p>\n

We are to be diligent in training our children\u2019s hearts to treasure the things above, not things\u00a0on the earth (Colossians 3:2). We also must help\u00a0our children anticipate situations that lead to\u00a0temptation and purpose in their hearts before that\u00a0temptation how they will respond (Daniel 1:8).<\/p>\n

Have a Parenting Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Have we thought much about our spiritual\u00a0goals for our children? Matters such as giving one\u2019s\u00a0life to Christ, growing in spiritual leadership, selecting\u00a0a Christian mate? We need to talk to our\u00a0children about these goals and pray with our\u00a0children about these goals. We then need to\u00a0follow up daily with a parenting plan to achieve\u00a0these goals.<\/p>\n

Good parenting takes work. Do not let the\u00a0world dictate our children\u2019s agenda for the day.\u00a0For example, some children will have days that\u00a0are determined by the television schedule, video\u00a0games, movies, Facebook time, or cell phone messaging.\u00a0If parents don\u2019t plan positive activities and\u00a0opportunities for their children, the world will be\u00a0glad to indoctrinate them with its own message.<\/p>\n

There is nothing better for our children than\u00a0to be immersed in the Word of God (Psalms 119:9).\u00a0The first line of Bible training is in the home. Beyond\u00a0that, look for every opportunity: Sunday\u00a0school, Wednesday Bible class, VBS, Bible Bowl,\u00a0Bible camp.<\/p>\n

We must also be aware of our children\u2019s\u00a0friends. We can train our children to choose friends\u00a0wisely. We should monitor our children\u2019s activities\u00a0with friends to make sure our children are being\u00a0encouraged in positive spiritual directions when\u00a0visiting with friends in their homes (1 Corinthians\u00a015:33).<\/p>\n

Parents know that the challenges of child\u00a0rearing are great, but the rewards of rearing\u00a0godly children are eternal. Young couples should\u00a0be encouraged to be strong and courageous and\u00a0trust God to help them rear their children. We need\u00a0youth who will have an impact for Christ in this\u00a0world.<\/p>\n
